Choking is something that a lot of people seem to be into or want to try out now, especially since all of the 50 Shades of Grey nonsense. For the purpose of this blog, we will be calling choking by its fetish name, “erotic asphyxiation”.

Erotic Asphyxiation is controlling yours or another person’s intake of oxygen during a sexual encounter. Plain and simple, it is restricting oxygen to the brain for sexual excitement/pleasure. This includes choking by hand, rope, or scarf. Controlling breathing by tape, toys, plastic bags etc.

Is this safe?

Ask anyone who actively practices this and they will tell you “no, it is not safe, but it can be!” There is always some risk involved in choking yourself or someone else. This risk includes death. Many people die from erotic asphyxiation each year, upwards towards 1,000 people according to Martin Downs from medicinenet.com. So please, before jumping into this, discuss it with your partner and do some research.

Should I play this way?

I think it is exciting for any couple to try something new so in that regard, yes I think you may as well discuss it and try it if that is something you think you would enjoy!

How do I start?

If you have never done this and are worried, start with research, Google is your friend. After you have done your research, make sure to talk to your partner about it. They may even really want to try it to!

After that, you can start to incorporate it into the bedroom. Maybe placing your hand on your partner’s throat, while you are passionately kissing and then applying a little pressure. When you start to apply pressure, make sure that you pay attention to your partners reaction. This would be a good time to utilize that safe word or action. Two quick taps means you need to stop and so does yelling red.

After you have figured out if your partner likes it, you can start to advance to toys, scarves and tape. Always go slow and know the risks.

Tips

  • Don’t put pressure on the Adam’s apple area only, your throat is sensitive and you could damage the larynx
  • Go slow, you don’t want to pass out. Figure out that perfect pressure
  • Ball gags and scarves restrict airflow, make sure that the person can remove them quickly if need be
  • Vomiting can happen, make sure your partner doesn’t choke
  • Don’t deprive the brain of oxygen for too long. choke and then release for the stimulation
  • Have a pair of EMT scissors close by to remove tape or bags quickly.
  • Do not hang yourself from closet rods, ceilings or anything you cannot escape from.
  • TEST objects for allergic reactions beforehand

Tricks

  • Hanging your head off the bed while laying on your back will give you a lightheaded feeling similar to choking
  • Placing the hand higher under the chin will cut off air without too much pressure
  • Try whispering in your partner’s ear while having your hand on their throat. You are then stimulating two erogenous zones
  • Hold your partner by the hair while choking them, it gives a greater control factor
  • Ask your partner to hold your hand while you choke them, then they can pull if they need release or press down for more pressure
  • Have them talk dirty to you while you choke them, telling you they like it etc.
  • Use your tie or scarf for added sex appeal and spontaneity
