Passing on Legit #1 Receiver Will Hurt Oakland Raiders in 2014

With Off-Season workouts underway and camp just around the corner, the Oakland Raiders still have some questions on the Offense that have yet to be answered.  Their biggest question will be at WR.  They went into the Draft with a need for a number one receiver and failed to grab one.  Why did they pass on Sammy Watkins or any of the other first round receiver talent?  Why did they not draft a WR at all?  Do they really believe James Jones, Denarius Moore and Greg Little are enough to go into the season with and dominate?

I get why Khalil Mack was drafted.  He is a highly touted player out of Buffalo who will definitely strengthen the Defense, but even NFL Network’s Daniel Jeremiah had this to say about Oakland prior to the draft: “The Raiders, like three of the four teams drafting directly in front of them, are unsettled at quarterback. They could also use a legitimate No. 1 wide receiver.”  QB and WR were their main concerns and they failed to address one at all, through the Draft.  The addition of Jones and Little are good adds but they still are not number one guys.

Adding a former “3” and a “2” does nothing in a tough AFC West Division that had some pretty stout Defenses last year, with them ranking 9th (Kansas City Chiefs), 10th (San Diego Chargers) and 14th (Denver Broncos).  In 2013, Oakland’s WR corps placed 24th in the league, only seeing the End-Zone 17 times via air.  Their top WR, Moore only had 5 TDs on the season.

While I applaud the signing of Maurice Jones-Drew to bolster their RB corps, I still feel Oakland will pay dearly for their failure to bring in a guy that will challenge opposing Secondaries.  Sure, they may have brought in Matt Schaub and drafted Derek Carr, but who in the heck are they going to throw it to?   It’s no wonder this team is consistently at the bottom of the AFC West.  They failed to address true needs in the Draft or Free-Agency and they will once again tank in a Division where scoring quickly is essential to victory.
