Detroit Lions: Players On The Bubble

This time of year is one of the hardest times for NFL teams as they make their final roster cuts. With the final roster being released Saturday August 28, 2014 teams must trim the remaining 75 players down to the final 53. It’s the final touch in forming a championship roster and takes a lot of time to make the decisions. Some players are a safe bet to make the team while others are hanging on the edge. Here are some of the players on the roster bubble for the Detroit Lions:

No. 5 Kellen Moore (QB): This might be one of the tougher decisions the Lions have to make when making final cuts. Even though the Lions have a solid backup QB with Dan Orlovsky, Moore has had solid outings throughout the preseason and shows promise to be a good back up. The Lions could go either way with this and still make out fine.

No. 4 Mikel Leshoure (RB): Seeing Leshoure on the roster bubble may come as a surprise to some considering he has been with the starting group since 2011. He hasn’t shown much in camp or preseason this year, and also hasn’t done much on special teams. Since the start of camp second year Running Back George Winn has been showing a lot of promise on special teams and first team reps. Many believe he will beat out Leshoure for the 3rd Running Back spot.

No. 3 Chris Greenwood (CB): Cornerback is one of the Lions deepest positions heading into the season. Darius Slay, Reshean Mathis, Bill Bentley and Cassius Vaughn are the obvious picks. The final is the hardest. 4th round pick Nevin Lawson is a physical back that is showing a lot of promise this offseason. Greenwood has shown promise, but lacks discipline as he has problems with illegal touches and coverage. He has a fighting chance but with a group this deep it will be hard to prove he can make the roster.

No. 2 Jerome Couplin (S): Couplin is an undrafted rookie, who is steadily progressing with the second team. The final safety spot is between him and Don Carey. Carey mainly played special teams, but is very good at it. Couplin needs help with his coverage, but his physicality is his strong point. If he continues to improve through the final preseason game, he could make the team.

No. 1 Corey Fuller (WR): Like Cornerback, Wide Receiver is another position full of depth. Fuller was on practice squad and struggled throughout his rookie year. The only man standing between Fuller and surviving final cuts is Ryan Broyles. Both are developing into reliable receivers, so for him to beat out Broyles he will really have to give it his all.
