5 Projected Roster Cuts: St. Louis Rams

It’s that time of year to spread around ho-hum jeer and bad news for a few players on the roster bubble. For the St. Louis Rams, there are so many young guys here that it is a bit difficult to decipher who’s worth keeping and who’s not. However after watching the tape and considering the injuries to players like Isaiah Pead as well as others, here is my list of projected releases:

No. 5 RB Chase Reynolds, RB – This former Seattle Seahawk was trying to push his way on the to the Rams’ roster. However, with three guys already ahead of him on the depth chart, combined with trying to recover from a sports hernia injury and that is a recipe for failure. This second year player out of Montana may want to venture over to the Oakland Raiders after his release. With Darren McFadden and Maurice Jones-Drew over there, after week three there will be an opening due to injuries

No. 4 Trey Watts, RB – The Rams already have a stable of RBs and unfortunately Watts is the odd man out. He helped his case a little on Thursday evening against the Cleveland Browns, when he rushed for 51 yards off of 13 carries. However, this young buck may have to sit on a practice squad before getting the call up during the regular season.

No. 3 Kadeem Jones, FB – Jones has the build of a punishing run-support specialist and could really help the ground game. The problem with that is the game is going away from FBs in general. The fact that dual-hatted TE Corey Harkley can line up as the H-Bank to provide run-support and as a TE does not help his case either.

No. 2 Austin Pettis, WR – With Sam Bradford done for the year, Pettis may be on the way out. Before last night’s 3-catch, 28-yd, 1-td performance, Austin had only 3 catches in the last three games. With Kenny Britt receiving plenty of praise from Jeff Fisher and Pettis being outperformed by Steadman Bailey, Brian Quick and Chris Givens, one has to wonder if he the Rams will go into the season with six or five receivers.

No. 1 Michael Sam, DE – And now the moment you have all been waiting for. Michael Sam will not make the 53-man roster. Not because of his sexual preference but simply because he isn’t good enough. According to ESPN’s Nick Wagoner, he has even admitted defeat saying:

“I’m very confident that I’m going to sleep really well tonight and I’m very confident I’m going to be on a team, the Rams or any other team in the NFL.”

The Rams only plan on carrying nine linemen on their roster and with Eugene Sims beating him out for the final spot, you can bet Sam will be hitting the St. Louis streets before the Saturday 4pm deadline.
