Abbrederis vs. Adams: Who Gets Cut?

Football is Back!!!

It’s that time of year again! NFL Training Camps have started, and storylines are swirling throughout about different position battles taking place.

In Green Bay, Wisconsin one particular job that will be looked at frequently during camp will be the wide receiver position.

Jordy’s back but…

The Green Bay Packers‘ offense will be getting back star receiver Jordy Nelson after he missed the entire 2015 season due to an ACL tear. They have Randall Cobb as their number two option. However, past that, things are up in the air when it comes to who will fill the final couple spots on the depth chart at the wide receiver position.

Here is the list

A few names that figure to be there are Jeff Janis, who came into his own, primarily with his Hail Mary catch in the playoffs against Arizona last season. Also, second-year player Ty Montgomery figures to get some time to return kicks, as well as get some passes thrown his way from the man in charge Aaron Rodgers. Rookies Trevor Davis and Herb Waters will get a chance as well, but there is one battle that needs addressing.

That is between third-year players Davante Adams and Jared Abbrederis.

Does one of these players get cut before the start of the regular season? It would make sense for one more so than the other, and I’ll tell you why.

Tale of the tape

Davante Adams since becoming a Green Bay Packer has had some ups and downs. In his first two seasons with the team, he has played in 29-games, 23 of them he started. He’s caught 88-passes for 929-yards and four touchdowns. Three of those scores came in his rookie season on only 38-catches while appearing in every game that season. In his sophomore season last year, he slumped a bit despite catching 50 passes and one touchdown.

Jared Abbrederis on the other hand, since coming into the league as a member of the Packers has been injury prone and missed his first full season in 2014 due to injury. Then last season he appeared in 10-games, not starting any of them. He caught only nine passes for 111-yards and zero touchdowns, with one fumble. Abbrederis signed a three-year, $1,575,000 deal with Green Bay. As he enters his final year of his contract, they could release him and save about $525,000. This capital can go towards another signing, or stadium upgrades to already beautiful venue.

It doesn’t make sense to get rid of Adams at this point. Especially, when despite a somewhat sophomore slump last year, he still hauled in 50 receptions in Nelson’s absence. With Jordy back, that could only benefit Davante more this season. It will get him more touches, from the slot or wherever the Packers decide to line him up.

So, if I’m the Packers, I’m releasing Jared Abbrederis and giving Davante Adams another season to bounce back from a not so great, 2015 season.
