Deone Bucannon: Key to victory for Cards

Looking back on the 2014 NFL Draft teams that chose to go after the high profile Safeties like Calvin Pryor or Ha Ha Clinton-Dix. There was still value at the position. Kudos to the Arizona Cardinals for picking up a gem in Deone Bucannon. He will be one of the key factors tied to the Cardinals victory over the Green Bay Packers this weekend.

I knew back in 2014 this 6-1/211 centerfielder would not go past the first round; however, there have been stranger things that have happened with the Draft. Players that I had high on my board would drop drastically because of poor scouting. Players like Keenan Allen or Zac Stacy who went in rounds 3 and 5 are good examples of this.

After taking a long hard look at the former Cougar, I realized this guy has great field vision gaining him 6 interceptions in 2013; he is very aggressive which is why AZ decided to move him to ILB. Bucannon fights for position using his body to shield the receiver, when the ball is in the air. I like his tackling ability; there are few NFL Safeties that pull off 114-tackles in one year even in college. Look at his success already; he has 112 (93 solo) tackles this year. That is 20^thin the league out of all players, no matter the position. This speaks to his aggressiveness when getting after the ball; his physical toughness is a force to be reckoned with. The guy was even named week 15 NFL Defensive Player of the Week.

Cris Collinsworth of NBC even had this to say about the second year player.

“I really have a lot of respect for Deone Bucannon…a guy with military parents and a guy who just said Yes Sir, when asked to do something.”

We all know these players do not come out of college as perfect products. There is always going to be something each player will have to work on upon reaching this next level. However this former Cougars’ transition from SS to LB as well as from NCAA to NFL has been seamless and he has truly brought the talent level up of this team.

He has a tough matchup this weekend against the beastly Eddie Lacy but this is a guy who doesn’t shy away from upper body tackling. Look for some serious smash mouth football as these two meet this weekend.

Couch Change: GB vs. AZ Divisional Round Matchup Preview

The Divisional round of the NFL playoffs is finally here. After a crazy, wild card round of the playoffs last week, the dust has settled and the final eight teams are playing for a spot in the Super Bowl. One of the match-ups taking place this weekend is Saturday night in Glendale, Arizona as Carson Palmer and the Arizona Cardinals will play host to Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers. The Packers are coming into this match-up after defeating the Washington Redskins in the Wild Card round last week. The win was probably the teams’ most complete performance of the season and it came at the most important time. However, now they have to play the number two seed in the NFC side of the playoff bracket this week. They are hoping that the result will be different this time around from when the two teams played in week 16 of the regular season when the Cardinals laid them to waste 38-8.

KEYS TO THE GAME: GREEN BAY PACKERS

Last week, the Packers played their most complete game and it was thanks to a very strong performance from quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers will need to have a repeat performance like that Saturday night against a very strong Arizona Cardinal defense. In fact, in order for Green Bay to even have a chance of winning this game, their offense, led by Aaron Rodgers needs to have a huge impact.

While the offensive performance of the Packers will be crucial Saturday night, the way the defense plays against Carson Palmer and company will also be crucial. The good thing for the defense is that their secondary appears to be completely healthy after Sam Shields finally practiced this week, after missing the wild card game last week. This is great news for a defense who ranked sixth against the pass during the regular season.

Eddie Lacy didn’t have a very good regular season, but near the end he began to turn things around and carried that momentum into the second half of the game last week to help lead his team to victory. Lacy ran for 63 yards and one touchdown against the Redskins defense and he hopes to at least come close to that again against the Cardinals’ sixth ranked rushing defense who has allowed just over 91 yards a game at 91.3.

KEYS TO THE GAME: ARIZONA CARDINALS

While the Green Bay Packers have a lot of things they need to do on Saturday night, the Arizona Cardinals have their own issues. The Cardinals had a bye week last week, but in week 17 they were demolished at home by the Seattle Seahawks 36-6. Their defense couldn’t stop Russell Wilson and company, so they will need to hope that the Green Bay Packers didn’t learn a thing or two by watching the video footage from that game. The absence of free safety Tyrann Mathieu could have a huge impact and Rodgers is sure to try to exploit the mismatch. The defense will need to step up Saturday night against Rodgers and company who will be out looking for revenge of their week 16 defeat.

Carson Palmer struggled mightily week 17 against the Seattle Seahawks at home. He completed only 12 of 25 pass attempts for 129-yards with one touchdown and one interception before being replaced by backup quarterback Drew Stanton. Palmer will no doubt need a better performance against the Packers defense who appears to be the healthiest they have been all season.

Running back David Johnson has become the workhorse of the backfield ever since Chris Johnson went down with an injury. Johnson finished the season with 581-yards and eight touchdowns in the backup role. He will need to improve on his 39-yard and one touchdown performance the last time he faced the Packers if he wants to help his team win Saturday night.

IMPACT PLAYER: GREEN BAY PACKERS

Aaron Rodgers – With the absence of Davante Adams Saturday night, Aaron Rodgers will be missing yet another play-maker this week. Aaron has seen what the Cardinals can do once already this season, so he should be able to bounce back Saturday night. Look for him to be the impact and elite player everyone has come to know during his career out in the desert.

IMPACT PLAYER: ARIZONA CARDINALS

Michael Floyd – The last time the Cardinals faced Green Bay, Michael Floyd had himself a great game. He caught six passes for 111-yards. If he wants to repeat his success, he will need to contend with a strong and healthy Packers secondary. None the less, look for Floyd to be the impact player for the Cards on Saturday night.

PREDICTION:

The Packers played their most complete game of the season last Sunday in Washington D.C. and they will look to carry that momentum into the desert on Saturday night. With Aaron Rodgers with momentum on his side, look for him to run the show for the Packers and try to get them over the hump and into the NFC Championship game. As far as the Cardinals are concerned, they hope to have the same or similar success in the teams’ week 16 encounter. If they can control the clock with the running game, the Cardinals should come away with the victory and put themselves within one game of a Super Bowl birth. Putting aside the fact that I’m a Packers fan and not trying to be biased, but if Green Bay can continue their momentum from last week and the secondary that is expected to be healthy can cause Carson Palmer problems, they can steal a victory over the “Team of ATL (NFL Around The League)” favorite Cardinals. Expect points to be put up in this one and for the Packers to upset the Cardinals in a shootout.

The 2015 NFL regular season has come and gone. In fact, it’s now 2016 and the playoffs are upon us. For the Green Bay Packers and Washington Redskins it’s been two totally different results as of late. The Redskins have been playing like they want to win the Super Bowl, while the Packers have limped into the playoffs after two straight losses by a combined total of 58-21. Aaron Rodgers and company just haven’t looked like the Green Bay Packers we’re accustomed to seeing year in and year out. Kirk Cousins on the other hand has been on fire for the Redskins. Since losing to the Dallas Cowboys in week 13, Washington won their final four games of the year with Cousins throwing 12 touchdown passes and only one interception in that span. Something has to give Sunday between these two teams and quarterbacks.

KEYS TO THE GAME: GREEN BAY PACKERS

First of all, the Aaron Rodgers led offense that has been inconsistent this season ever since coming off their bye week has to improve. The 23rd ranked offense in 2015 needs to put their regular season performance behind them and pretend that the playoffs is a fresh start.

Eddie Lacy had a down year in 2015 running the ball. He accumulated only 758-yards and three touchdowns rushing. Near the end of the season however, he started showing a glimmer of hope that he was turning his year around. In his final seven games, three of those were over 100-yards. Green Bay will need a good game from Lacy on Sunday against Washington’s 26th ranked rush defense.

For the majority of the season, Head Coach Mike McCarthy wasn’t in charge of the play calling. December 13th, he took the responsibility back and led the Packers to a 28-7 win over Dallas. Including that win, Green Bay finished the season 3-2 under McCarthy’s direction. If the Packers are going to have success against Washington, they will need to rely on the smarts of their coach and Aaron Rodgers to carry the team to victory.

KEYS TO THE GAME: WASHINGTON REDSKINS

Will Kirk Cousins continue the fantastic season he’s had for the Redskins in which he posted 4,166 yards, 29 touchdowns and a quarterback rating of 101.6? He is facing a fantastic Green Bay pass defense that ranked 6th during the regular season. He will need a great game on Sunday in order for the Redskins to move past the Packers.

The Redskins rushing attack that ranked 2oth during the regular season consists of Alfred Morris and Matt Jones. Morris had a down season rushing for only 751-yards and one touchdown, while Matt Jones ran for 490-yards and three touchdowns. Between the two of them, they will need to step up on Sunday against Green Bay’s 21st ranked rushing defense.

Washington is looking to win their first home playoff game since 1991, when they defeated the Atlanta Falcons in the Divisional round. This was the same season that they Super Bowl XXVI. They will need to use the home field advantage to their benefit if they want to get a shot at the divisional round this time around.

IMPACT PLAYER: GREEN BAY PACKERS

James Jones – Dating back to the beginning of the season when Jordy Nelson went down, the Packers signed free agent James Jones to come back home and play once again with his former friends in Wisconsin. It proved to be a smart signing even though he’s not the caliber of Nelson. Jones was the leading receiver for Green Bay this season hauling in 50 receptions for 890 yards and eight touchdowns. He is my pick for impact player for the Packers on Sunday.

IMPACT PLAYER: WASHINGTON REDSKINS

Jordan Reed – The Redskins star tight end had a fantastic season in 2015 which saw him make 87-catches for 952-yards and 11-touchdowns. Jordan’s 11 touchdowns ties Bobby Mitchell‘s record from 1962 for fifth most receiving touchdowns by a tight end in team history. Look for him to be Kirk Cousins’ go-to guy on Sunday in hopes of shredding the Packers’ defense.

PREDICTION:

Green Bay enters the Wildcard round on Sunday as the fifth seed after losing to to Minnesota Vikings in Week 17. The victory ended up giving the Vikings the NFC North title, the third seed in the NFC playoffs and a home game. Washington comes in with four straight wins that secured them the NFC East title and they look to be set at quarterback for the future with Kirk Cousins running things. With the way these two teams have been playing lately, it seems like an easy choice to say Washington will win this game, but if they do, it will be close. With that being said, I wouldn’t be surprised if we see a lot of points put up in this one, but we’ll have to wait until Sunday to see how everything unravels.

NFC North Power Struggle

With Week 1 in the books and Week 2 already partially started, it would seem that the two teams that were predicted to win the NFC North are at the bottom, while the Minnesota Vikings and Detroit Lions are at the top. Is it just a minor hiccup, or do the Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears have reason to worry?

Chicago Bears: With Jay Cutler as your QB, its hard to tell what you’re going to get. He has two amazing weapons in Alshon Jeffery and Brandon Marshall. However both seem to be a little banged up to start the season off, and you already lost to the Buffalo Bills at home. How do you respond? A game against the San Francisco 49ers is probably not the best follow-up scenario.

This defense is not your father’s defense of the past. This is a defense that looks almost polar opposite that of the Seattle Seahawks‘ defense. There are only a couple of defenses worse than the Bears, and one even happens to be in the same division. The only sparkle of hope for the 2014 Chicago Bears is a three-game stretch where they play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Lions and Dallas Cowboys at the end of November. However the Detroit Lions may not be such an easy task.

Detroit Lions: Calvin Johnson Jr. That is basically all one has to say about the Detroit Lions? However they also have what seems to be a resurgent Reggie Bush. Has the NFC North truly become an arms race? You got Matthew Stafford and Aaron Rodgers in the same division. Not to mention Cutler, who more times than not looks like a great QB. So who do you pick as the NFC North favorite?

On paper, the Lions look like a good pick. Dare I say even a better pick than the Packers? Sure why not? Their defense is more explosive than that of the Bears and Packers, and their offense has more weapons than just Megatron now. How are they not in the conversation for NFC North Champions at the end of the year?

Green Bay Packers: You really only have to say one players name when it comes to the Green Bay Packers. This is who their season rides on, and their success solely on his shoulders. Yep, you guessed it, Eddie Lacy. Oh? You thought I would say Aaron Rodgers? Sure as long as you have Rodgers as your QB, you have a chance to win any game. However Lacy is the bell cow that the Packers have been looking for ever since before their Super Bowl run season.

As long as Lacy is healthy and performs like last season, the play-action plays will work better and the defenses on the other side of the ball will actually have to play honest against one the best Quarterbacks to play the game. Will that be enough to overshadow what is looking like another terrible defensive unit? Dom Capers has to do something, or else Mike McCarthy is going to look like a fool for keeping him on the staff.

Minnesota Vikings: Out of all four teams in the NFC North, the Vikings are the only ones who actually dominated their opponent. With Green Bay being dominated by the Seattle Seahawks, the Bears losing at home to Buffalo, it left the other two teams in the North for a chance to shine. Detroit pulled it off by convincingly beating the New York Giants. However Minnesota literally controlled the St. Louis Rams, a team that many predicted to be a surprise this year, and made them look like a 2-14 team.

How is it a team led by Matt Cassel, a team that drafted a Quarterback in the first round of the 2014 draft was the only one that looked like they were a full team out there? Adrian Peterson wasn’t even a factor in the game. His stats were less than noticeable. So even without the spectacular stats of one of the greatest Running Backs of our time, the Vikings still managed to put a 34-6 score up on the Rams.

Is there a power shift in the NFC North? The Detroit Lions have been on the radar for that NFC North crown for some time now. The Green Bay Packers have won the division the last three years and won the Super Bowl 4 years ago. The Chicago Bears missed the playoffs two years ago with a 10-6 record and are the last team not named the Packers to win the NFC North. How about the Minnesota Vikings? Two years ago they were a surprise as they made the playoffs, but not since the 2009 season has anyone even considered the Vikings a threat.

Come January, one of these teams will have to be number one, and one will be at the bottom. I believe many will be surprised by who the bottom feeder of this division will be. Don’t be surprised if one of the wild card teams this postseason comes from the NFC North.

Ranking The Best Running Backs For The 2014 Season, 10-6

No. 10 Reggie Bush: Highly underestimated and considered a bust after his years with the New Orleans Saintsand Miami Dolphins, Bush has made his claim as one of the better backs in the NFL. Bush had his second 1,000-yard Rushing season in his career with the Detroit Lions. He had one of the better average yards-per-carry on this list as well as a couple runs over 20-yards. With the Lions adding more to the receiving game, Bush’s numbers could improve greatly if he can prove to be a product in the Red-zone. Bush’s 4-touchdowns were the lowest on this list. This year, if he can take the heat off Calvin Johnson, look for Bush to ramp up production in the running-game and passing-game. Bush’s 500+ Receiving-yards made him one of the most reliable backs in the passing-game. If healthy, Bush will easily have over 1200-yards this season.

No. 9 Eddie Lacey: Before I get chewed out, Lacey is a good Running Back. Lacey had an impressive Rookie season with 1100+ yards and 11-touchdowns. A really impressive performance for the rookie. Lacey will only continue to get better with experience. While most believe he will be a top 5 back his stats and performance are that of a top 10 back. His 4.1 average per carry doesn’t look bad. After all 4-yards-per-play is pretty good, but other backs on this list have a higher yard-per-carry ratio. In his defense, Lacey does have one of the best QBs in the game, even if Aaron Rodgers missed part of the season. Another factor that might hurt Lacey is that the Green Bay Packers are going to be looking to James Starks to help carry the load as well. Can Lacey prove he is a top-5 Back? Yes, I do believe he can be but will he? In my mind, I say not until another year or so.

No. 8 Doug Martin: The “Muscle Hamster”, and the least talked about player not only among the Tampa Bay Buccaneers but also in the Running Backs conversation. Before missing last season, Martin had nearly 1500-yards and 11-touchdowns in an impressive rookie breakout. Despite the issues Tampa has, Martin very well is the best weapon on the Offense. If healthy, martin can re-climb the mountain that he fell off of due to injury. The climb will be harder than before but with a hopefully improved passing-attack, Martin could see increased performance.

No. 7 Marshawn Lynch: The Super Bowl ring, the holdout and lack of performance could see a decrease in Lynch’s ability. Can Lynch be a top-5 Back? I boldly say no. His 4.2 per carry is amongst the lowest on the list; however his 12-touchdowns proved he can do it in goal-line and Red-zone situations. With the emergence of Robert Turbin taking a bulky amount of carries, Lynch will not be as productive but he will be a good performer this season. Look for Lynch to help the Seattle Seahawks win instead of dominating teams completely.

No. 6 Demarco Murray: The one Running Back that I have felt is the most underrated in the league is of course Demarco Murray. For the Fantasy freaks Murray helped me win two-championships last season but more importantly he helped the Dallas Cowboys lead a spectacular Offense. If the Defense didn’t play like the 0-16 Lions Offense, Murray would be more recognized. Murray leads this list with a 5.2-yards-per-carry. If the Cowboys would hand the ball of to Murray more than 4 times (see Minnesota Vikings game), the Cowboys could be more successful. Not to mention in that game Murray had 4-carries for 31-yards and a 7.8 average. Sadly, that will always be the problem with Murray. He can not seem to get the ball in his hands, but when he does, he makes it happen. Murray will have a great year and should emerge as almost a top-5 Back.
