FANTASY FOOTBALL: TOP TIER QBS AND GUYS TO SNATCH UP

Go ahead and laugh! I saw comments about my last FF post, questioning my credibility. You can read that here. I’ll just let you know you’re not going to get a bland perspective here. I want you to take chances to get on top of the competition. If that means taking the best TE in football at pick 6, make it so. Anyway, I know a few of you are waiting on this post to prepare for your draft. I will get to the defenses after this one, but now we are focusing on the signal-callers. I’ll focus on the top 5 guys and then give you a few late rounders that you may be able to snatch up and ball with.

Lamar Jackson

There’s no real secret here. The 2019 MVP will get you money on the ground and in the air. I truly believe that picking this guy up anywhere between pick 9-22 is going to pay off big. Racking up almost 31 PPG is definitely a good reason to pick up this year’s Madden cover guy. Don’t let the soft tissue issue fool you. He’s ready to rock, week 1. Also, don’t wait too long to grab him, or you will be in pain whatever week you face him.

Patrick Mahomes

Yes, the Superbowl MVP is extremely important in fantasy. The newest Co-Owner of the KC Royals is balling in fantasy. While he missed time due to a dislocated patella, the sensational half-billionaire still knocked out a 4000+ yard season. He has plenty of weapons; grabbing one of them is vital if you plan to stay relevant in your league. You can probably grab PH in the first to second round anywhere from pick 11-25. If he slips past this, please let me know. I am joining your league.

Dak Prescott

Everyone was probably wondering where I was going at three. I‘m sorry if this confused you or even pissed you off. Stay with me! Dak had an excellent season putting up 25.9 PPG. With a new shiny toy in Cee Dee lamb in the huddle, this offense will soar. Don’t be surprised if all three of Dem Boyz end up being fantasy gold this season, and it’s because Dak will go aerial again this year. People still don’t believe in the franchise-tagged player and leave his ADP to somewhere in the 5th round.

DeShaun Watson

Did you miss out on Lamar Jackson? No worries, here is a guy that can still put up great numbers because of his dual-threat abilities. Watson got you 40 extra points (standard leagues) on the ground that you may not have expected last season. Don’t worry about missing the production from his top-dog DeAndre Hopkins. D-Wat likes his burners and loves launching to guys like Brandon Cooks and if healthy, Will Fuller. You may be lucky enough to scoop this guy up at the back end of round 5.

Ben Roethlisberger

Yes, he’s back! No, there’s no AB. But Pittsburgh has been known to pop out talented WRs left and right. Ben threw for over 5000 yards in 2018, but was sidelined in 2019, with an elbow injury. Look for Big Ben and Diontae Johnson to be the new connect in Pittsburgh and the next 1200 receiver. Yes, I said it. They throwing all over the yard, pick up Ben in the middle to back of the 11 round in most 10-12 man formats.

Ok, there’s your obvious top 5, but here are the guys you may want to snatch up.

Russell Wilson

We all know what this guy is capable of on the ground and in the air. I always refer to his form of play as “Back-yard-ball”. The Wilson-Lockett connection is going to get even better this season. Adding another year with the Bully DK Metcalf doesn’t hurt either. Wilson had 382 FPS last season and will top that number this year. Look for Mr. Wilson to be available at the back of round 4. 30+TDs each year since 2017? Nuff said!

Baker Mayfield

He had a bad season last year, costing fantasy players 42 points in interceptions in 2019. Look for him to turn it around this year with a fully healthy OBJ and Landry combined with a pissed off David Njoku and Austin Hooper in the fold. He has arguably the number two back in the league in his backfield. Play action is going to get this Browns’ offense racking up the points in 2020. Look for Baker to still be on the shelves around the middle of round 9.

Carson Wentz

If you find a guy in round 8 who is putting up 4000-yards a season, please consider that a steal and scoop them up. With all of the burners in this offense, look for the Eagles’ lead guy to throw more than 22-yards per game.

Kyler Murray

If you missed out on the early mobiles, then you are still in luck. This guy runs like he broke something in the house, and his parents found out. Imagine an excellent passer who could get you an extra 50+points that weren’t expected? Kyler’s targets are almost unfair. Legend Larry Fitzgerald and the 99 rated hands Nuke are a combination worth salivating over. The 2019 rookie of the year should be available around round 5-6.

Gardner Minshew II

Uncle Rico is not the flashiest of players, but with a second year of gelling with the third-year player, D.J. Chark, they are bound to hook up for more than their small 20 FPS per game.

Look, you know most of the names; Matt Stafford, Matt Ryan, A-A-ron, and of course, the Goat. If you lose out on the guys above, don’t miss out on these. I wish you all luck in your draft. I’ll try to get to defenses before the season starts.

FANTASY FOOTBALL: TOP TIER WRS AND GUYS TO SNATCH UP

In my last two posts, yall lost your cookies about how I rated TEs and did not show Gronk the love, but you loved the RB post apparently. Thanks for the look. For those of you who did not read, here you go! As far as Gronk goes, this is not Madden, if you take a year off from the game and fluctuate weight more than a person with a lap band or thyroid issue, I have a problem giving you the top grade.

You have to earn it

There are people actually putting in work to prove they deserve the CRR honor. Moving on. Now it’s time to move on to my favorite skill position considering fantasy. Wide Receivers for some are extremely expendable week to week. However, if you choose a few rock stars out the gate while everyone is fighting over RBs, you may ride them to a couple of close victories.

People will hate this strategy but do it anyway

In year’s past, I managed to get D-hop (DeAndre Hopkins) in the first and win championships. Yes, I said plural. Sure, I surrounded my squad with plenty of other talent, but when you have a player who knocks out 10+ points per game, the consistency screams “take another shot at me”. I’ll talk more about him later, but let’s move on to the method to my madness.

I like looking at those total yard columns for end-of-year stats with receivers, but it is not my go-to. I don’t do PPR, but those who do, know exactly what I’m about to say.

Targets Targets Targets

There are deep-threats like DeSean Jackson that will fool any novice into thinking that their 10+ points came from high, consistent production throughout each game, but let’s be honest. It was probably off of 2 catches for 70-yards and TD. Hail to the “Julian Edelmans” of the world. Guys who get 8-catches for 70-yards and a TD per game. Sure they’re not getting the TD every game but even without it, you still get 15-points in PPR versus Jacksons 7 without paydirt. I’m not saying draft Jules this year, but I am saying take a look at the targets column and line up your board up that way.

Can they stay on the field?

COVID-19 is a factor this season but I’ll try to stick to the regular injury script. Can your guy stay healthy? This is not a knock on Keenan Allen but if I have the choice between, a consistent healthy Cooper Kupp in later rounds or Keenan Allen early, I’m choosing Kupp. As I have said before, I avoid players within 1-year post signing a deal. I usually see a drop in production or an injury on the way. Am I going to avoid Pat Mahomes should he be on the board when the time comes? Nope. But in general, these are the guys I consistently avoid: Julio Jones, Amari Cooper & AJ Green.

OK, OK, OK! I’ll give you what you came here for.

Here are my guys my top 10 Fantasy WRs for 2020

1. Michael Thomas

Was there any question here? This guy beat all other players in targets in 2019 by 28. If it ain’t broke… right? Emmanuel Sanders will open things up even more in NO now that he has joined the squad. ADP – 4TH Overall

2. Tyreek Hill

Speed, speed, speed kills what this Super Bowl Champion can do in space is crazy! He’s not just a deep-threat. When healthy, this guy is an all-out nightmare! Reek bust out 130 points on the season (10+ per game). ADP – 1ST Round (backend)

3. DaVante Adams

He is coming off of a toe injury from 2019, but the guy averaged 20 PPR points per game for the last two seasons. He is about to go HAM with A-A-Ron Rodgers on tilt after his eventual replacement was drafted this year. ADP – 1ST Round (Middle)

4. Julio Jones

I know what I said earlier, but if this guy is hanging around on the board by the end or middle of round 2, I have to take the gamble. He’s explosive, and there is a ton of risk-reward. 1st -2nd round

5. DeAndre Hopkins

Nuke is just that guy! In 2019 he had 150 targets and still knocked out 10+ FPS per game. Yes, he has a different QB, but he has always been able to produce, no matter who the signal-caller is. I would have him higher, but that very stat of different QB pushed him down a spot or two. Keep in mind if it were anyone else, they would be out of the top 5 more than likely. ADP – 1st Round (Backend)

6. A.J. Brown

This is my list! I’m telling you the way that this Tennessee Titan caught fire late in the year, I’m sure a second year of chemistry will point the numbers even higher in 2020. This guy will be the steal of the draft! ADP – 3rd round (backend)

7. Chris Godwin

With Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski taking over Tampa Bay, I am encouraged that his numbers may take a slight decline. Brady reads inside to out when throwing, but I imagine the connection he and Godwin will have equates to what Josh Gordon and Tom had in New England. He’s still a must-have if he’s on the board around the 2nd round. ADP – 2nd Round (early)

8. Marquise “Hollywood” Brown

You play like you practice. Have you seen this guy’s offseason? Brown gained 23lbs of muscle while still maintaining his speed. The former Sooner racked up 7 TDs with a screw in his foot in 2019. Please believe this guy is out to shake up this whole list in 2021. PPR leagues get ready. When Lamar isn’t targeting his TEs, he’s tossing rocks to his bestie like they grew up 19 miles away from each other or something. ADP – 7th Round (early)

9. Keenan Allen

I have been a fan of this guy since he was drafted. He drew comparisons to Anquan Boldin back then, and I’d say now he is his own man! After totaling almost 1200-yards in 2019 with Philip Rivers, he’s still set to ball out with the new signal-caller whoever that may be. My money is on Tyrod Taylor. ADP – 4th Round (Early)

10. DJ Chark

This former LSU Tiger had a whopping 9-games with more than 7-targets in 2019. I know this because I picked him up off the waiver wire and balled out with the young fella. Topping the 1000-yard mark in only his second year, look for this Jaguar to climb the charts like a Ludacris album in the early 2000s. ADP – 4th Round (Middle)

You can hate me now…

I’m sure you’re rolling your eyes and screaming Adam Thielen, Mike Evans, or Allen Robinson, but as I’ve said before. This is my list. If you’re upset, go sit in the corner until I’m done here. If you must know, Thielen was on my honorable mentions list. Here they are.

Honorable mention:

Adam Thielen

There is only one “Highlander” in Minnesota in the WR department. Adam is going to get a lot more work until Jefferson gets his footing in his rookie year.

Mike Evans

I’m just not a believer of Tom Brady outside and deep. That’s where Mike thrives.

Allen Robinson

Nick “BDN” Foles or Mitch “how’d I get this job” Trubisky is throwing this guy the ball. When they figure out that it should be Nick, maybe I’ll change this list around.

Tyler Boyd

AJ Green is back, but there is a rookie named Tee Higgins who could also eat into Tyler’s workload.

Diontae Johnson

The Steelers reload with WRs like no other team. Johnson had a solid rookie campaign and I am curious to see what he does next as long as it is not in weeks 7 and 11.

Jarvis Landry and Odell Beckham Jr.

Both Juice and Odell Beckham Jr. Would be stellar pickups beyond the 5th round. They both had over 130-targets and over 1000-yards receiving last season.

Snatching any of these guys up beyond round four or five would be nice. With the 6-10th pick in most fantasy drafts, I usually draft in this order:

1- WR or TE

2- RB

3- QB

4- TE

5- RB

What can the Ravens Afford Post a Lamar Deal?

Pat Mahomes and Lamar Jackson talk were all anyone could blab about when the “half billi” deal went down last week. We know that Lamar is going to get a similar deal annually, but maybe not longevity-wise. Today, let’s not focus on Lamar. I would like to see what that type of deal is going to do to a couple of other guys on the roster.

Guys like Ronnie Stanley, Marlon Humphrey, and Mark Andrews are essential to this team, but will there be casualties in securing the league’s most electrifying player? Can the Ravens afford to let a few of these stars walk to secure Lamar’s bag?

I said what I said!

I’ll put a number out there that the Baltimore Ravens‘ own website put out there. $170M over 4-years puts him at about $42.5M per year. That is just $2.5M under the current Super Bowl MVP. Let’s say the projection is right (even though I believe Lamar will surpass Pat’s deal). Will there still be enough money to sign some of the biggest stars on the team? Let’s take a look.

Securing the blindside

The market for LTs like Ronnie Stanley is about $17.2M annually, according to spotrac.com. I am guessing that based on the ever-rising market per position, and having a prestigious company like Roc Nation representing him, Ronnie is going to raise the market with his contract at about $23M annually. That is one million more than Laremy Tunsil is currently earning. If my Louisiana math is correct, in a year, just two Ravens are projected to take up 32.8% of the cap. Let’s move on to our beloved “Fruit Punch”.

Fruit Punch

Marlon Humphrey has been disrespected in the media by several uniformed analysts. However, with the help of PFF, legit film watchers, his agent can see clearly why his guy is going to command top-5 CB salary. Marlon may be under contract until 2021, but Eric DeCosta likes resigning guys prior to their final year. $18M annually is the number EDC could try and start at for the Ravens’ number one CB.

However, Segal may argue that Humphrey’s ability to play both inside and outside makes him a versatile player, commanding more of a salary. The Ravens could let Humphrey walk and move on with Peters as the top guy, but I don’t see that in the plans at all. Look for Humphrey to gain about $19M per year, which would put him just under Stephon Gilmore, who has everyone drooling over his ability to lock down his side of the field. Adding the numbers together again, let’s look:

Lamar – 42.5M
Ronnie – 23M
Marlon – 19M

Can I hold something? Yeesh, those three guys are projected to make a combined $84.5M per year! They would take up a whopping 65.6% of the salary cap. Hopefully, the cap rises before 2021 because there is a lot of money to hand out and very little room to operate under. Either way, Steve Bisciotti is about to have to start bringing sack lunches to work.

Raiders In Love w/ QB Not Named Carr?

As I’m scrolling through mock drafts, something interesting came up when I saw the Las Vegas Raiders at the 12th overall pick. Jordan Love was the selection. Knock if you’re with me. I’m kidding. I just felt the need to say that. Thank you, John Gruden, for the line. Anyway, back to the lecture at hand. Jordan Love? Bucky Brooks is the one responsible for planting the seed of hitting the reset button on your franchise signal-caller. I am in full disagreement, and here is why.

Reliability is a stat

Carr put up 4,054-yds last season. There are starting QBs in the league who did not even put up 2,500 yards on the year. Granted, guys like Matthew Stafford and Joe Flacco were injured during the year, but Joe has only thrown above 4,000-yds once in his 12-year career. Carr is a healthy, reliable signal-caller who can produce with sub-par receivers and under the most unlikely conditions.

Needs or Wants?

Sure, he only threw 21-TDs on the year but look what he had to work with. Additionally, it’s hard to put in that offensive work, if your defense is so outmatched, that you can’t get the offense on the field. The Raiders gave up 21.5 first downs per game in 2019. You cannot sit there and draw up a draft board that has QB at the top of the shopping list when there are so many holes to be filled elsewhere on the team.

The team’s needs are at WR, OLB, and CB. WR Jerry Judy, DE/OLB K’Lavon Chaisson, and CB C.J. Henderson will all still be on the board at pick #12. Don’t blow the pick on Love.

Not all Love

Besides, when I look at the tape on Love, I see a few things. I see a shiny new toy for Las Vegas. It’s easy to break out the Pat Mahomes comparisons because he is just raw out there slanging the rock, like Eazy-E in Straight Outta Compton. However, I see many throws into double coverage. Sure, on a highlight reel, it looks great, but at the next level, under increased pressure, we’re looking at the next “throw-it-n-pray” Jameis Winston. Even Charlie Campbell from walterfootball.com lit him up on the comparison:

“Player Comparison: Blake Bortles. Love reminds me of Bortles in a few ways. Bortles and Love both have very good skill sets, but they also have problems with accuracy, turnovers, and seeing the field. Both of them can be inconsistent with stretches of good play and then times during which they struggle with their issues.”

Raider Nation, is that what you want your future to be? A guy who doesn’t go through his progressions and chunks it no matter what, when you have a reliable, durable option who just needs weapons?

Stick to the script

Don’t do it! Don’t go after the flashy 2020 Tesla when you have a reliable 2014 Buick in the garage already. The Buick can be fixed at the local shop with maintenance and a couple of upgraded features. What shape will Las Vegas be in if the Tesla breaks? You know a local Tesla mechanic because I don’t. John Gruden might start to feel a little heat should he push the team in that direction, and it not work out.

Couch-Fire Projections for SB LIV

It’s that time again folks. You have had your offseason, draft, and camp. Now you are 100% sure that this is your year! We’ve heard this speech mainly from the “America’s Team” since 1996, and all they have done is prove they can turn Tony Romo into a future Hall of Fame Broadcaster.

But really folks, what chance does your team have this year? Are they contenders or pretenders? I am going to give you the four top powerhouse teams in each Conference and why they are so beast.

Additionally, the couch-fire projections will also cover the AFC and NFC Champions. Strap in folks and get your stress ball handy, it’s going to be a bumpy ride. We’ll start with the top NFC Teams.

NFC TOP TEAM PROJECTIONS

4. Philadelphia Eagles

Of course we look at the fate of these E-A-G-L-E-S to fall on the shoulders of 2017 MVP hopeful Carson Wentz. The guy plays lights-out football and with speedster DeSean Jackson back in the house, and a defense that was 12th in the league. Sure, there was a lot of turnover here, but when you have seasoned vets like Orlando Scandrick and Malcolm Jenkins in the same backfield that experience is going to take some of the load off of Wentz’s shoulders. Add a supped up RB in Miles Sanders that everyone is raving about and this is a formula that has playoffs written all over it. According to rotoworld.com

“NJ.com reports Miles Sanders has “easily been the most impressive runner” through the Eagles’ first 10 training camp practices.”

Of course, this house of cards all relies on its foundation of its signal-caller to stay healthy. Let’s face facts Cody Kessler isn’t taking this team anywhere.

3. Los Angeles Rams

Sean McVay is all I should have to put here. His offensive mind despite the SBVIII hiccup caused by the diabolical but masterful work of Bill Belichick is still one to hold in high regard. Jared Goff is still a monster in the game, and when your offense is averaging 421 yards per game, I believe this powerhouse does not miss a beat come the 2019 season. Now if we could just get them a fan base that shows up for Super Bowls or regular-season games for that matter.

2. Minnesota Vikings

Now hang on! Hold the pitchforks and cabbages! We’re looking at a team who has one of best WR tandems in the league in Stefan Diggs and Adam Thielen. Their defense is one of the top 5 in the league. So what Kirk Cousins had a bad year. His body of work says that this is a bounce-back year and to look out for pure explosiveness out of this O. Add a healthy Dalvin Cook to the equation, and we are talking postseason rumblings at a minimum.

1. New Orleans Saints

Now that the lawsuit is being cleaned up and a new replay rule is in effect concerning pass interference, the Saints are definitely not going to miss out of the playoffs. According to the current NFC Championship odds, the Saints are top contenders for the title. SB, maybe. But what I do know is this, Michael Thomas got paid for a reason. The Saints’ D is reminiscent of the 1990’s D. Last year’s unit locked down the run so well they only allowed 80-yards-per-game total rushing. Drew Brees is not going out like a punk and missing playoffs this year.

Now that we have the National Football Conference projections, let’s focus on the American Football Conference.

AFC TOP TEAM PROJECTIONS

4. Baltimore Ravens

It’s no secret the Baltimore Ravens have been retooling their offense around one of the leagues most dynamic players in Lamar Jackson. Aaron Kasinitz of pennlive.com has been reporting all offseason on Jackson’s improvement. I honestly believe a repeat performance for the regular season is in order. Teams will not know how to prepare for this offense weekly. This Earl Thomas led defense and offensive time of possession will carry the load, and only two of their divisional opponents will figure them out on the second encounter. This team will hit the playoffs with speed and may even advance past the wildcard round. It all boils down to can the Ravens adjust once other teams sniff their scheme out.

3. New England Patriots

I say this every year and even focused on an article that pinpoints the problem here. The AFC East has to be the worst division in football. Brady and the gang have an easy road to 11-wins each season because all they really need to focus on is five teams. Six of those are already in the bag. The Dolphins, Bills, and “Jests”, I mean Jets are simply non-factors. Only one of these teams really had upgrades during the offseason and draft, and that was the Jets. Spending $121 Million on key free agents such as Le’Veon Bell and C.J. Mosley is a great start, but I would like to see how they transition on the new team before declaring a change in the guard. I put NE at no. three because let’s face it, Tom Brady is old! However, even with his age the Brady bunch is still able to pull off the impossible. According to the current AFC Championship odds, the Patriots are still top contenders for the title.

2. Los Angeles Chargers

Phillip Rivers is getting up there in age, but his mind is getting sharper. Should he avoid his typical late-game interception and finish, this team is looking at another postseason birth. Keenan Allen is healthy and already making highlights in camp. This defense is continuing to beast under the direction of Gus Bradley, who is very creative. Sure, I see Melvin Gordon’s holdout issue. According to Dan Graziano of ESPN.com:

“He’s justifiably upset that the fifth-year option on his rookie contract is scheduled to pay him just $5.6 million this year, and he wants a new deal that pays him like the high-level performer he has been.”

I believe the team has such a great stable of backs with Justin Jackson and Austin Ekeler that they won’t miss a beat. Postseason hopes continue for the Bolts.

1. Kansas City Chiefs

The league MVP, Patrick Mahomes put up 50-TDs last season. He made no-look passes, he thrilled, he chilled and then his defense stalled when they needed them most in the playoffs. Andy Reid is not likely to make the same mistake this year. Adding veterans like Morris Claiborne and Tyrann Mathieu to sure up the secondary and help this team get back to January football. Now, if they could just keep their players from allegedly physically abusing women and children, they might go all the way!

Let’s talk Championships!

AFC

Let’s stay in the AFC since we are already here. Call me a homer, but I’ll go ahead and place the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Championship against the Kansas City Chiefs for the Week Three rematch of dynamic gameplay out of this world. This is what the people pay to see! Lamar Jackson and Patrick Mahomes have two completely different styles of play but bring entertainment nonetheless. I believe the game will be one similar to the Chiefs vs. Rams game that rocked the football world on Monday Night Football last season. While Jackson and crew bring fast Ferrari type players on offense and a beast secondary, Mahomes ability on third and long to extend drives will be too much for the Ravens to handle. My prediction for this nail-biter is the Chiefs pulling it out by a field goal to seal it 30-27.

We now have our AFC Champion, the Kansas City Chiefs. There is still one more couch-fire projection to go. Let’s look at the NFC Championship.

NFC

I’m predicting the New Orleans Saints vs. the Minnesota Vikings. As much as I want to put Sean McVay and crew here in the mix, I cannot ignore the fact that 2018 was Kirk Cousins first year in a new offense on a new team. The Vikings have placed protection around him by drafting a center first round. With that protection, look for Kirk to throw strikes all over the field as Kyle Rudolph flashes ability from at least five years ago. Drew Brees will not be ignored. We all are aware of the nasty elusive element Alvin Kamara brings to the game. That talent will be heavily utilized in what should be a pretty good showdown between the “Dirty South” and the “North Star State.” We have to have a winner, and while Kirk and the Vikes bring much to the table, I have to go with the Saints bringing more firepower on offense.
