5 Raven Standouts of 2017

This dead zone is the most annoying part of every year. In my life, this is the time where even golf starts to look appealing. Heck the NBA Summer Leagues and even the WNBA come across my television. I am very thankful for Madden and my franchise league, or I would be in trouble. I wish I could inhibit the traits of a bear and go into hibernation until football season at this point. With that not possible, I’ll do by best to give you something; you Baltimore Ravens fans deserve that. So today I give you five breakout Ravens to watch in the 2017 season.

5. Kameleon to take over?

With the departure of Zach Orr and the transition from OLB to MLB, things are looking up for Kamelei Correa. According to ESPN the former BYU star had only 48 snaps in 2016 but is expected to start next to C.J. Mosley. There is competition for the spot with long time veteran Albert McClellan and second-year player, Patrick Onwuasor who got the start in week 17 of the 2016 season against the Cincinnati Bengals. I believe the Ravens have an idea of what Correa is capable of and gave the start to Onwuasor simply because they wanted to see what he could when presented the opportunity.

I’m sure all is forgiven from the last offseason when Correa had a “hand” in breaking Dennis Pitta’s finger during a practice scuffle involving the defense of Joe Flacco. John Harbaugh is on board with Correa as a replacement for Orr as he said he is “very confident” (Rotoworld) that KC will win the job. I’m not saying this is a win by default, but when the only competition is underdeveloped rookies and a second year player with 21 total tackles in 11 games, the answer is clear. The “Kameleon” (Boise State nickname) will win the job.

4. Cowboys and Browns dropped gold…

This next player has arguably the biggest uphill battle on the team because of the recent addition to the position. I speak of how Vince Mayle is going to be the ringer in the 2017 season, but no one believes me. It looks bleak as media is either tearing this guy apart or ignoring him altogether, due to the “Jeremy Maclin” headlines overshadowing his talent. Minicamps are not a great example of what he can do. This man uses his body to make plays, and when minimum contact is permitted in these drills, he cannot be expected to shine. The former fourth-round pick out of Washington State will turn heads in training camp because of physical prowess. Once the pads come on and we hear that click clack, I’m sure you will hear more about the former Cowboy. People will talk about Keenan Reynolds because he has great speed, but he is just a QB trying to find a role on an NFL roster. Reynolds is not what the team needs. The offense has speed in Mike Wallace, Breshard Perriman, and Chris Moore. There is another player’s name I’m just sick of hearing. “Oh if he can stay healthy…?” FACE IT RavenNation, Michael Campanaro will never be what the Ravens need him to be. We would have signed Julian Edelman in the 2014 offseason if it wasn’t for the hope this guy brought via scouting before the NFL draft. It is time to move on to other talent and clear the roster spot.

3. The Return Missionary Takeover

While we are the topic of players with injury, I’d like to shine some light on the situation of one of the Ravens’ DEs. Bronson Kaufusi is a hard working blue collar type of player with prototypical size who could be a force to reckon with the departure of Timmy Jernigan. Timmy was traded to the Eagles prior to the draft. I believe the move happened because the Ravens knew that with Jernigan having such a productive season with 5-sacks, 1-Int, and 1-forced fumble, a contract beyond the Ravens’ ability would be unavoidable. Brandon Williams’ production commanded a 5-year 54 million dollar deal.

Kaufusi is believed to make it a seamless transition. The BYU product had a setback that ended his season before it began last year. Imagine being 25 already and having an opportunity of a lifetime snatched from you before being allowed to compete. That loss will fuel this young man. People who choose to put their life on hold for a mission know a thing or two about resiliency. Bronson will win the starting job and replicate the lost production.

2. Small School Swag?

This next guy is a small school project that I believe to have a great deal of upside at just the right time. Unfortunately, rising star Tavon Young tore his ACL this offseason and will miss the entire regular season. However, this misfortune is just the opportunity Jaylen Hill needed to have a shot at the 53-man roster. The Jacksonville State Alumni has more swag than most and can back up all of the talk in his gameplay. The 5-11 186lb CB led his team in interceptions as and INT return yards with 6 for 181. When watching the videos of this young man, all I see is football intelligence. He knows exactly where to be on the field to make that play. Additionally, it is what he does after the catch is what awes me. This guy’s elusive rating is on 1000!!! His ability to make people miss is uncanny. The Ravens could use the help at kick return and could save a roster spot by having him in both the Nickel CB spot as well as the KR spot.

1. The Changing of the Guard…OLB

The final standout projection for my post is obvious. It’s more of a changing of the guard. I may offend some of the Ravens’ faithful with this post especially all of those attending Ball So Hard University. Terrell Suggs has given the organization his best years, and now it may be time to close this chapter of his life and move on to the next. I get it, he still had eight sacks last year. However, he is not James Harrison, and his replacement is in the building already. The man I am referring to is Za’Darius Smith. Sure “Z” dropped in production last year after having what many believe was an awakening in 2015 with 5.5 sacks. I believe that while the OLB position currently has monsters like Matt Judon and recently drafted Alabama rookie Tim Williams in the building, “Z” will still ball out. Smith has the best mix of youth and experience on his side. Nextgen stats even has him as one of the 20 fastest players in the league to the QB when getting sacks. He is good at stopping the run and can pin his ears back and get after the passer. Is this really a guy you want sitting on your bench Baltimore?

Who will emerge w/ Pitta done?

Baltimore is hurting folks. The team takes yet another hit with the recent news of Dennis Pitta’s final career ending hip injury. While the news is disheartening, some of us are wondering if the man who laid claim to the spot will actually claim it?

According to BR.com, Crockett Gillmore said this earlier in the year:

“I don’t want to come off the field. All downs, every down, and [I want to be] the guy…There’s no reason I shouldn’t be. There’s no reason I can’t be. That’s great we have nine tight ends. They’re going to enjoy the bench. That’s just reality. I’ll tell them. They know.”

Can you walk the talk?

Oh really? Well, Sir, the stage is set, the lights are not quite as bright as they will be, come September, but your very existence on this team depends on you being able to step up and make the other four TEs on this roster “Enjoy the bench”. Some people would call the statement above a check that he can’t cash. I call it truth now with Pitta down. There is the significant possibility that 110+ targets are coming the Bushland Texas Native’s way.

Is there really any Comp?

Let’s look at the competition. Ben Watson is so long in the tooth, his teeth are dragging on the floor. At 36, we cannot expect full gameplay out of such an old vet without injuries or him being pulled for blows during a drive. Another case of a sharp football mind but the body cannot keep up at that age.

Our next supposed candidate is primarily a blocking TE who served a ten game suspension for violation of the PED policy. Nick Boyle would have to play lights out to secure the starting Joe security blanket designation. He has too high of a hill to climb. Gillmore is simply better and has no history of PED use.

Crockett has so much upside to him because of the displays of flashes in 2015 before he broke his back in 2016, Sure, it was only 33-recs for 412-yds and 4 TDs but anyone being targeted 47 times obviously is on the radar. Only Maxx Williams was targeted one more time than Gillmore that season and for fewer yards (268). Even Yitzi Weiss of the Baltimore Beatdown had this to say about the three-year veteran:

“Gillmore is an above average run blocker, and he will be out there for alot of snaps. Which means he will have more opportunities to make plays than the other tight ends on the roster, who are not as good in this area.”

Williams is coming off of a knee injury which required a rare surgery not commonly performed according to BR.com. Maxx has not made it back to the field and is scheduled to return for training camp hopefully. He is not the answer.

That leaves Crockett with legitimate competition for the position against the “Redzone Bully” Darren Waller. Waller’s speed is scary but he cannot run-block as well as the more experienced TE Gillmore. Waller is still transitioning over to the TE spot from WR which is not always an easy crossover.

I truly believe that after the smoke clears and the dust settles that this battle has a clear winner and his name is none other than Crockett Gillmore.

Is Justin Tucker only Raven worth picking in Fantasy?

Just kidding folks. Tucker is a monster in the leg-game, no matter what the Denver Broncos‘ kicking staff will tell you.

However, there are five valuable Ravens to pick up. I wanted to start with the Baltimore Ravens because I feel I have neglected Raven Nation. For that I am sorry. Yall are my heart. Let’s get down to business. Here are the five best Ravens to actually draft in this year’s Fantasy Football draft. I’ll even tell you where to select them.

#5 Steve Smith Sr.

– This angry, competitive little sprite refused to go out on a sad note. He will continue to piss of CBs around the league this year, as he adds on more catches to his already notable career. He will prove to be a good pickup but with this next character coming back from injury, Smith Sr. may only see 60-70 catches this year busting about 7 FPS per game. Steve is going off the board in Mock Drafts about the 7-10^th round in most 10-12-player leagues.

#4 Dennis Pitta

– HOLD ON! I know what you’re thinking! Ben Watson was a beast in N.O. However, a new town means a new pecking order for the 35-yr-old. With a healthy Pitta, Joe Flacco will go back to his security blanket and make him one of the top TEs in football once again. I see Pitta getting 70 catches this season and breaking the century mark for FPS on the season. His ADP (Average Draft Position) is 16^th round or undrafted. People are still skeptical of the hip injury so buy now or pay later. Ben Watson is currently going ahead of Pitta, but don’t waste your pick.

#3 Kamar Aiken

– Projected PPR (points per reception) monster! Sure this guy is not going to light up the end zone, but he will get you the W in PPR leagues. When Smith was injured, Joe relied heavily on this guy to bring in the tough catches. There are plenty of mouths to feed this year, so don’t expect that much early. Remember injuries happen. When they do, remember I told you about Aiken. Stash him and bring in as your ringer later on. You can catch this fill-in around the ninth or tenth round.

#2 Justin Tucker

– Swaggomatic himself is probably the best FFL option on the whole Ravens squad. However, because RBs carry the load, I had to slide him into second. Tucker will go in for round 10-11, but I would say grab him early (9). He is that good! Of course, you know this already. You’re a Ravens fan, duh!

#1 Terrance West

– If you thought I was going Flacco here, you probably need to rethink your entire fantasy football draft strategy. It hurts to say this, but he just does not carry big FFL value. West, on the other hand, is likely to be given the starting job. He’ll be a sleeper RB that will give you RB1 numbers, as long as John Harbaugh doesn’t muck things up with a 3-headed monster approach. RB-by-committee helps nobody! Yes, Javorius “Buck” Allen, as well as Justin Forsett, are pushing for this spot, but West has thrilled and killed it in camp. All he needs to do is not get injured, show that same talent in the preseason, and he will easily win the starting job.

For those that believe Watson, Buck and Flacco belong on this list; you must be in extremely deep leagues, or you have a bias towards our team. It happens. Just remember, DO NOT DRAFT ALL RAVENS when playing fantasy football! Sure you’ll feel like a winner, but you’ll be busy on the waiver wire all season making up for the mistake. Lastly, I advise you to draft as late as possible because of the ambiguity at RB and TE positions.

WHO RUNS THE AFC NORTH?

Everyone loves a good list, and in the AFC North it is no different. Defense may win championships but firepower on Offense is a key element in victory as well. With that said, lets take a look at the Offenses by rank in the North. We’ll start with Cleveland. Mainly because we know that is the basement or bottom of the barrel.

#4 Cleveland Browns

QB: Cleveland has had more starting QBs than anyone in the AFC North, possibly the entire league in the last five years. Robert Griffin III is a continuation of this carousel. However it could be the change the team needs to have some consistency, if RGIII can pull it together and revive his career. He’ll need to win the job first.

WRs: The Browns’ only WR weapon wanted a better QB, and who could blame him? The San Diego will enjoy his talent. Corey Coleman is coming in as a rookie and will revive this tantamount unit, but there is no help other than Gary Barnidge

TEs: Gary Barnidge aka “the Barnyard Dog” had a breakout year last season posting 79-1043-9-TDs EJ Bibbs was a major disappointment. Look for the Barnyard Dog to once again lead him team in receptions.

Line: I’ll go ahead and say once again Cleveland can be excited about their O-Line. This unit is simple a dream scenario and will continue to flourish. This unit led by six-time All Pro Joe Thomas is going to be dangerous in 2016.

RBs: Isaiah Crowell and Duke Johnson are not premiere backs…on any other team in the league. They are here in Cleveland. This unit combined barely scratched over 1000-yards last season. Hue Jackson insist that this will be a running team so stay tuned as they continue to work on that.

#3 Baltimore Ravens

QB: Joe Flacco may need an extra year to get back to the form we are used to seeing after having ACL surgery towards the end of last season. Ryan Mallett is showing flashed of greatness so far, but only to solidify the backup spot as Flacco does not come off the field for injuries at all. In fact last year was the first time he was seriously injured in his 9-yr career.

WRs: Steve Smith Sr and Mike Wallace are veterans on the backside of their careers, but still pack a punch. Look for a healthy Breshard Perriman to prove he was worth the first-round selection in 2015. Kamar Aiken has made his name well known in the AFC North as he hauled in 75-944-5-TDs in 2015. Look for Wallace and Aiken to battle out for the #2 spot behind Steve Smith Sr.

TEs: Ben Watson looks to lead this unit, even in his old age. Crockett Gilmore has a nastiness about him that can’t be ignored. Maxx Williams still needs to catch his stride with the offense and assert himself. Dennis Pitta is showing potential this offseason and could be Flacco’s favorite target once again, if he can prove he’s healthy and confident in his ability.

RBs: This stable of backs is going to have a fierce competition during training camp. Justin Forsett should be leading the pack, even though he was coming off of injury. The real story here is the possible return of Trent Richardson. I say possibly because of his lack of conditioning. If he gets on John Harbaugh’s ****list he may not even make it though camp. This unit will be strong, come start of the season but who will be the top-2 backs is still in question

Line: This line was questionable due to injuries last season. The team was also questioning Eugene Monroe’s injury history and commitment level. Losing Kelechi Osemele to the Oakland Raiders, hurt Charm City, and triggered the drafting of Ronnie Stanley to bolster the unit. Marshall Yanda is still leading this unit by example but it will take more than him to protect Joe.

#2 Cincinnati Bengals

QB: If the QB position were a two-headed monster, this tandem would be the best in football. AJ McCarron made it a seamless transition once Andy Dalton went down in 2015. This position is not one of concern for WHO DEY Nation as it is very secure.

WRs: Here is where the question mark is. AJ Green is one of the best WRs in football, but who are his backup dancers? Brandon LaFell is coming off of arguably his worst NFL season since 2010, posting no TDs in 2015. Tyler Boyd is the sleeper in this group. Look for him to battle LaFell for the number 2 spot in training camp. Should he win the job, this team gets much more effective at the position.

TEs: Cinci is collecting Tylers. Tyler Eifert and second year player out of Rutgers Tyler Kroft head this group. According to rotoworld.com Kroft drew Zach Ertz comparisons which is great considering he will may be the week one starter if Eifert can’t recover in time from injury.

RB: This is another unit that cannot be ignored. Jeremy Hill and Giovanni Bernard combined for 2075 total yards last season. There is a huge possibility that they could both rush for 1000 yards next year.

Line: This is an excellent pass protection unit. They lead the league currently, only allowing their QB to get hit 58 times. Andrew Whitworth may be long in the tooth but the team has exercised plenty of faith in the 10-year player. He has a capable supporting cast and will definitely keep his red-head signal caller upright in 2016.

#1 Pittsburgh Steelers

Disclaimer: NOT A STEELERS FAN! I’m a Ravens fan!

QB: Having a top-5 QB is not as impressive anymore in this league with guys like Blake Bortles, Jameis Winston and Derek Carr coming out of nowhere with formidable talent. Nonetheless, they are not on Big Ben Roethlisberger’s level YET. Ben is just as dangerous as he was his first year. The only problem is if the goes down, Bruce Gradkowski is the backup. Gulp!

WR: This WR corps is about as unpredictable as ever. When the league isn’t suspending them or giving huge fines for TDs celebrations that result in an explosion of memes throughout the internet, this squad is straight ballin! Antonio Brown is a family home name now and arguably the best WR in football (I said arguably). Marcus Wheaton may not be but, Ben will find him a lot this season, due to Martavis Bryant being suspended again.

RB: DeAngelo Williams is a beast! He has such an aggressive running style; he just plows through players with raw power. It is hard to believe that he is still shifty and explosive after 10 seasons this is proven by his 902 yards and 11-TDs from last year…did I mention he was the backup? Le’ Veon Bell may have to share the load with Williams, due to his notable 2015 season but it only makes this unit more dangerous.

TE: When Heath Miller up and decided to retire this offseason, I was not sure how they would replace to such a reliable veteran. Then owner Kevin Colbert shocked me with a huge acquisition from the San Diego Chargers. Ladarius Green is still fresh at 25. He was primarily used as a blocking TE in SD but is very athletic. This was a free-agency steal in my opinion. Between him and Matt Spaeth, the Steelers won’t miss a beat in 2016.

Line: This Unit is only behind Cinci in terms of QB protection. They only allowed 33 sacks last year on their signal callers. Now with Le’ Veon Bell back, they will have an even easier time to get it done on the ground. Maurkice Pouncey was one of the best centers in football in 2014 and will resume top-tier placy to protect his signal caller in 2016.

Cleveland Browns: TE Competition post Cameron’s departure

People are making a huge stank over other Tight-End situations in the AFC North such as Dennis Pitta for the Baltimore Ravens being placed on the PUP; Jermaine Gresham leaving the Cincinnati Bengals for the Arizona Cardinals or even how Heath Miller is the most experienced TE in the AFC North. But lets talk about Cleveland’s situation.

During the offseason, former Cleveland Brown, Jordan Cameron cashed in on a 15 million dollar deal with the Miami Dolphins, leaving the Browns with a huge hole to fill at the position. I am hoping they felt some confidence with the current depth at the position because they failed to check that box off early in the NFL draft.

They did manage to pick up a “tweener”, Malcolm Johnson in the sixth round but let’s be real here, this guy wasn’t even announced as a TE when he was selected. Cleveland even has him listed as an FB. Johnson will be used more like the Ravens use Kyle Juszczyk, as an underneath H-back who primarily catches play-action screen passes. Even ClevelandBrowns.com’s Andrew Gribble confirms Johnson’s use in this manner when he said:

DeFilippo comes from an Oakland offense that regularly used a fullback, as Marcel Reece landed in the Pro Bowl this past year after catching 37 passes for 265 yards

With that said, lets take a look at the rest of the lineup for the Browns.

Barnidge is primarily a blocking TE but has the most experience of the group. Rob Housler is the only recognizable name of the bunch and even he put out dismal numbers with the Arizona Cardinals. With the receiving corps for the browns only bringing in 12 combined TDs in 2014, this group is in serious trouble if someone doesn’t step up.

I normally put the Couch’s change on Florida State but Kevin Haplea’s 2 career TDs in college isn’t anything to write home to Mom about. However, something had to catch Cleveland’s eye in order to bring this young man into camp. Hopefully they see something the rest of the league doesn’t.

Today the Couch’s change is on Iowa State’s E.J. Bibbs to win the starting TE job in Cleveland. I watched the tape on this guy and saw a pure football player. He has great agility, makes one handed catches and is not scared to get the wind knocked out of him to make a play. This John Mackey award semifinalist racked up 84 receptions for 844-yards and 10-TDs during his collegiate tenure. With the competition wide open at the position, it is easy to root for this former Cardinal. Speed may be an issue for him, but what can you expect from a 6-2, 258 pounder? For that exact reason I see Bibbs as a 3-down player. His size makes him a great option in the run game. I can see Terrance West breaking for huge runs with this guy leading the way.

It’s anyone’s job to win and Browns’ fans will be excited to see who comes out on top, even if the rest of the league could care less.

Baltimore Ravens: Crockett Gillmore – Third Round Gem

Ok Couch Nation,

Some of you may have viewed my articles and noticed a trend; I love the skill-positions! Nothing against the hard grinders in the trenches (I will show them some love soon), but coming from a receiver position in the Cross Roads Amateur Football League, I love talking about guys who can get after the ball via the air. Speaking of which, the Baltimore Ravens’ Pass attack is going to be a dominant force in the AFC North this year now that depth has been added at the WR and TE positions. We all know about the Ravens’ WR starters and bench, and we know two of the talents at the TE position, but let’s dig a little deeper folks. Let’s go take a look at this year’s third round selection: Crockett Gillmore.

This Colorado State product may not be a household name yet, but should Dennis Pitta or former Houston Texan, Owen Daniels go down, he may be. Ozzie Newsome should be receiving high praise from John Harbaugh for this pickup, as he was definitely a steal. I watched the tape on this young man and please believe me when I say, HE IS GIFTED. This rookie has the ability to line up outside as a WR and in today’s evolving game, he may need to. The towering 6’6, 251lb TE uses his body to get position on defenders and is not afraid to leave himself open, extending for catches across the middle of the field. Gillmore’s catch radius is nothing short of daunting. He tends to runs smart routes and has an ability to find open space on the field. Not only does he have the capacity to use his size and long arms to his advantage, but what the Amarillo, Texas Native does after the catch is impressive, in and of itself.

Upon first glance, one can’t imagine such an elusive proficiency in such a tall being. However, place that ball in his hands and it’s easy to see the natural fluidity he possesses; i.e. hip flexors are loose as he changes direction with ease. Make no mistake, Gillmore can power through defenders with that nasty stiff-arm of his all day long, but his agility is what led to his 111 catches for 1308 yards and 8 TDs during his time as a CSU Ram.

He has a great deal of confidence too; a normal tendency for most Texas born athletes. In an interview with Baltimore Ravens’ reporter, Ryan Mink, for instance, Gillmore had this to say when asked if he was one of the most complete TEs to come out of the 2014 Draft:

“There were only 2-3 guys that can put their hands in the ground, that are true TEs…I pride myself on being able to block.”

Gillmore talks the talk and believes he is one of the 2-3 guys he spoke about, however, I am not entirely convinced as of yet. When reviewing some of his game footage, I could see Gillmore a bit lost at the second level while run-blocking. There were moments when he couldn’t find a blocking assignment at that level. This is the only area that I saw could use some work. His pass-blocking ability was exceptional. When he stayed back to block you could almost see a smile on QB Garrett Grayson’s face, smiling with the assurance that he wouldn’t be touched. And as an added bonus for Baltimore, Gillmore already has a level of confidence in the trenches owing to his conversion from DE to TE in 2011. Although he still dabbled in the Defense throughout his collegiate career, he knew his ticket to the big leagues was on the opposite side of the ball.

So in conclusion Couch Nation, I am excited to see #80 don the black and purple and can’t wait to see what he can bring to this already talented Ravens’ Offense. Ozzie Newsome sure knows how to pick them. I may not agree with some of his madness when Free-Agency comes around and maybe even leading up to the Draft, but one thing is for sure; Ozzie is a late round Draft genius and Gillmore will prove to be one of those late-round gems that gives the Ravens an even brighter future.
