The Good: Montgomery is a patient runner that follows his blocks consistently. He runs with a low center of gravity and power, which makes it difficult to tackle him if you do not wrap up. Displays soft hands when called upon in the passing game and does a good job separating from Lbs in coverage. Constant leg drive and clean/smooth footwork. The former cyclone tailback can be a headache in open field with his elusiveness. He has subtle leans, head fakes, and hesitation moves to slow down the reaction of defenders.
The Bad: David tends to press the hole too quickly and winds up in the back of his blockers. Montgomery will look for the big play and bounce runs outside unnecessarily. Although he has sneaky burst, he lacks top end speed. Possible durability concerns due to a physical and aggressive running style. He has accumulated over 600 carries in 3 years, there’s some tread on his tires.
Conclusion: Currently my RB2, Montgomery offers a physical inside rushing presence. He can play 3 downs with his receiving ability and his willingness to give his passer extra time in pass protection. He may never become a star player, but he has the skillset to become a valued asset to someone’s ground attack.
