Eagles vs Giants Postgame Observations

This seemed like a bounce-back game for the Philadelphia Eagles and a “Houston we have a problem” game for the New York Giants. Some things I noticed:

On D

The Eagles finally got the fast start they’ve been looking for. Linebacker Jordan Hicks made a nice play on a pass from Eli Manning and caused an interception, giving the Eagles a short field and momentum on their first possession.

The defensive line got good pressure. Chris Long has been very effective in limited snaps. He’s not getting sacks but the pressure from his speed rush frees up other guys to make plays.

Fletcher Cox was his usual dominant self.

Tackling still is an issue. Granted Saquon Barkley is a phenomenal player, but the Eagles just didn’t wrap up on his 50 yard TD run. Not to mention LB Nigel Bradham got put on his butt, on that play.

The Eagles secondary which had been struggling showed improvement keeping plays in front of them and limiting the big play. Jalen Mills again gave up a big chunk of yardage but battled all game.

On defense, the line got pressure and moved Eli Manning off his spot all night. Eli isn’t effective at all when forced to move around in the pocket.

Ronald Darby and Jalen Mills played good coverage after much criticism. Defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz showed a new wrinkle in the game plan. That being some Cover 2 schemes giving Jalen Mills help over the top. A very effective counter to what offensive coordinators have been doing.

Carson is back Ya’ll!!!

Carson Wentz took another step in his return to form after an ACL injury. You saw him extending plays with his legs and running for first downs.

Tackles Lane Johnson and Jason Peters battled and gave good effort despite injuries and age in Peters case.

Alshon Jeffery with 12 Targets  8 catches for 74 yards. Nelson Agholor 5 targets 3 catches 91 yards. Zach Ertz 9 targets 7 catches 43 yards. A good days work for the top receiving targets.

Overall this Giants’ team is Saquon Barkley and Odell Beckham and not much else. The Eagles should have dominated this game and they did. A good bounce-back game.
