Eagles 2019 Free Agent Options

by EUGENE Holt

After the quest to repeat as Superbowl Champions fell short, the Philadelphia Eagles are left with some clear needs on their roster. GM Howie Roseman has his work cut out for him as the team is set to lose many prominent players to free agency. Add the fact that the team at the moment is terribly short on spending money, and you get tough offseason to navigate. But that’s why I’m here! I figured I’d help Howie out by listing some affordable Free agent options I believe fit in Philly. No big names, these are strictly guys that won’t cost an arm and a leg, but still are solid players:

RB
Tevin Coleman – Coleman is possibly the best fit for the type of offense the Eagles like to run. He’s a good receiver out of the backfield and he brings speed to an Eagles offense that is lacking that trait at Running Back.

TJ Yeldon – Another player with dual threat abilities. He’s a bigger player that brings some power as well.

Kareem Hunt – Adding Hunt would definitely be a controversial move. But on the field Hunt is already a very good runner and excellent receiver. A player of his caliber wouldn’t usually be available, but his off the field issues have to be worked out before any NFL team can trust him again. Still worth giving him a look.

WR
Donte Moncrief – At 6’2 216 he runs well giving the Eagles some much needed speed at the WR position. Had over 600 yards receiving on a Jacksonville team with subpar QB play, so there may still be upside for the 26 year old.

Chris Conley – A 6’3 200 pound burner coming from that prolific Kansas City offense. Coming off his rookie contract, Conley could be poised for a breakthrough season as a deep threat.

Tyrell Williams – Williams is yet another player with the wheels to get overtop of the defense. Williams being the most accomplished WR on this list probably will cost the most as well. But he would be worth every penny paired with Carson Wentz

Mike Wallace – If all else fails the Eagles could opt to give a mulligan to Wallace. He would be a cheap option, and if healthy he can still help a team.

DE
Shane Ray – Fallen out of favor in Denver playing OLB, maybe Ray can rejuvenate his career playing DE in a 4-3 like he did in college. The hope is he can show some of the pass rush abilities that made him a first round pick.

Steven Means – A familiar face, Means has been with the Eagles for years. Each year just barely missing out on the final 53. This maybe his chance to break through and provide quality depth.

Za’Darius Smith – The 6’4 272 lb. pass rusher had a breakout season with 8.5 sacks. Coming from a 3-4 defense there may be an adjustment period, but rushing the passer is rushing the passer. He would be a welcome addition to the likes of Fletcher Cox and Michael Bennett.

Vinny Curry – Another familiar face isn’t a free agent right now, but is widely rumored to be a salary cap casualty. If and when that happens, Curry would fit in perfectly providing pass rush and good run defense.

None of these players would be considered major free agents splashes, but when building a roster, solid players like this on reasonable contracts are essential. Don’t be surprised if you hear about the Eagles kicking the tires on a few of these guys.
