Draft Profile: Kerryon Johnson

by Damian Parson

College Football is the clear and only pipeline to the NFL. It is filled with thousands of talented young men that dream of playing at the next level. Only 1.5% of those players become pro football players. Every draft has positions that are deeper than others, some believe this is a quarterback class and others believe it is a running back class. Here is my scouting report!!

Kerryon Johnson, RB, Auburn

Height-Weight: 6’0 212 lbs

Film reviewed: Ole Miss (17) Missouri (17) UCF (17)

The Good: Kerryon is supposedly a clone of Steelers RB Leveon Bell. He has a very similar style as Bell. Johnson is a powerful downhill runner with good patience to match. He trusts and follows his blockers well, it allows his vision to lead him towards the open hole. Do not count on bringing him down with simple arm tackles often, he runs hard enough to break through. Johnson is productive with yards after contact, he gets stronger as the game goes on. The first contact does not bring him down consistently. He has a nose for the end zone, he is a strong option in the red zone.

The Bad: Like Leveon Bell, Johnson lacks game-breaking speed. He is more of a strider than explosive top-end speed. He has an upright running style and that opens him up to bigger open field hits. He needs to be careful with his upright style to secure the football to prevent turnovers. This season he battled a few injuries: left the opener with a lower hamstring, suffered a shoulder injury in the Iron Bowl, and had bandaged ribs in the SEC championship game. Factoring in his style of play and upright running style, his health does come into question.

Pro Comparison: Leveon Bell

Round 2-3: Unless Kerryon test exceptionally well and exceeds everyone’s expectations, he will be a day two/three pick. He should be a good option for a team with a smaller change of pace back and needs a more bruising between the tackles guy.
