Tennessee Titans
Draft Grades:First Round
The most anticipated first-round draft in the past 5-10 years did not disappoint. There were highs, lows, & of course Roger Goddell getting booed!! A flurry of trades, surprises, steals, & reaches. I am here to grade for every division’s first-round selections. Here are my Draft Grades.
AFC North
Cleveland Browns
Picks: QB Baker Mayfield (1st overall), Denzel Ward (4th overall)
Day 1 grade: B+
Thoughts: The opening pick in the draft was a shocker to many fans at the draft & around the league. Baker is a confident playmaker. He has an infectious attitude and leaves it all on the field. Everyone wanted Sam Darnold or Josh Allen, but GM John Dorsey drafts HIS GUY. The Ward selection was a surprise as well but he was the top corner on the board and a position of need. He is possibly the best man cover corner in the draft. With AJ Green & Antonio Brown in the division having a potential shut down corner is important.
Cincinnati Bengals
Picks: C Billy Price (21st overall)
1st round grade: B-
Thoughts: One offseason after losing LT Andrew Whitworth & Kevin Zeitler, this Bengals retooled their line. Adding LT Cordy Glenn via trade with the Bills, & Price helps solidify the left side of their line. Price has experience playing all three interior offensive line positions. Price is a day one starting caliber lineman.
Pittsburgh Steelers
Pick: S/LB Terrell Edmunds (28th overall)
1st round grade: B
Thoughts: Truthfully a surprise selection, the player not the position. Edmunds followed his brother Tremaine as the first brother duo as first round picks. Terrell is a physical player & explosive athlete. He has the ability to cover rbs & tight ends in dime coverages. He’s a hybrid player that has good versatility.
Baltimore Ravens
Picks: TE Hayden Hurst (25 overall) & QB Lamar Jackson (32nd overall)
1st round grade: A
Thoughts: The Ravens traded down & back up to select Hurst/Jackson. Hurst is a good tight end that can play all over the formation. Flacco should love this pick, but despise the next selection. Adding the pyrotechnic QB Lamar Jackson will put pressure on Flacco to perform well this season. Jackson makes the Ravens future very bright.
AFC East
New York Jets
Pick: Sam Darnold
Day 1 Grade: A-
Thoughts: The Jets have been searching for a quarterback for a very long time. The last semi-successful drafted signal caller was another Trojan Alum Mark Sanchez (record 33-29). Sam Darnold is a good quarterback with some quirky issues with his accuracy and decision making. IF given time to sit a refine his skills, NYJ should have their QB of the future.
Buffalo Bills
Picks: QB Josh Allen (7th overall) & ILB Tremaine Edmunds (16th overall)
1st round Grade: A
Thoughts: The Bills were rumored as a team willing and ready to trade up for a signal caller. As the board shaped up inside the top 5, the bills saw their opportunity. They decided to trade w/Tampa Bay for quarterback Josh Allen. Selecting the prototypical big armed QB & one of the freakiest athletes in the draft (Edmunds) is a huge win for the bills.
Miami Dolphins
Pick: DB Minkah Fitzpatrick (11th overall)
1st round Grade: B
Thoughts: When you have to face Gronk, Edelman, & Brady twice a year, having a versatile defender is prevalent. Inserting Fitzpatrick gives the dolphins a free safety/nickel combo. He can roam the deep center, cover in the slot, and impact in the box. This selection gives a nice boost to that defensive backfield.
New England Patriots
Picks: OG Isaiah Wynn (23rd overall) & RB Sony Michel (31st overall)
1st round Grade: A
Thoughts: The Patriots chose to stay draft towards a win now attitude, instead of grabbing a first-round quarterback. Adding a versatile athletic OL Wynn & his UGA roommate Michel gives this offense a nice shot in the arm. They’re fine tuning the offensive line to protect their elder signal caller as well as becoming more physical in the run game.
AFC South
Houston Texans
Picks: None
1st round Grade: A
Thoughts: After trading their first-round selection to the browns, in order to draft Deshaun Watson. He caught fire before tearing his ACL in practice last season. That pick was trending towards slam dunk category.
Indianapolis Colts
Draft Pick: OG Quenton Nelson (6th overall)
1st round Grade: A
Thoughts: After receiving three second-round picks with the Jets trade, the Colts landed the best offensive lineman in the class. It was the best pick available considering Andrew Luck is getting healthier. Previous GM Ryan Grigson allowed Luck to continually take beatings. Protect your investment and look forward to an improved run game.
Jacksonville Jaguars
Draft Pick: DT Taven Bryan (29th overall)
1st round Grade: B+
Thoughts: This pick was another surprise because it was not a position of need. With that being said, the Jags are attempting to replicate the SB Champ Philadelphia Eagles defensive line rotations. Bryan adds the incredible potential of power and quickness on the interior defensive line.
Tennessee Titans
Draft Pick: LB Rashaan Evans
1st round Grade: A
Thoughts: Linebacker & pass rusher were the top needs for this Titans team. They added a well-rounded versatile defender in Evans. He can play inside & outside as a rusher. He’s athletic enough to drop into coverage and physical enough as a downhill thumper.
AFC West
Denver Broncos
Draft Pick: ED Bradley Chubb (5th overall)
1st round Grade: A
Thoughts: This was purely a “best player available” selection. Chubb wasn’t a need for Denver, but he fell into your lap & their star rusher is a huge fan of the kid. Chubb will bring the power, quickness, and size needed on the edge. He will pair with Von Miller to hopefully replicate the production & fear Miller/Ware struck in opposing offenses.
Kansas City Chiefs
Draft Pick: None
1st round Grade: B+
Thoughts: The Chiefs traded this selection last year in order to draft QB Patrick Mahomes. He eventually made Alex Smith expendable. He played well albeit in one start, but Andy Reid saw enough for him to be the incumbent starter for the 2018 season.
Los Angeles Chargers
Draft Pick: S Derwin James (17th overall)
1st round Grade: A
Thoughts: The Chargers have a rising defense that is hoping to have two “healthy” lockdown corners next season. Adding the versatile safety James solidifies that backfield. James is a box safety that has potential to cover tight ends and backs. He will add toughness & athleticism to the Chargers defense.
Oakland Raiders
Draft Pick: OT Kolton Miller (15th overall)
1st round Grade: C
Thoughts: One of the more head-scratching picks so far in the draft, Gruden did not address the failing defense. Miller is a solid tackle and should benefit from a year to sit behind veteran Donald Penn. This pick did not sit well with the fans in Dallas or raider nation.
NFC East
Dallas Cowboys
Draft Pick: LB Leighton Vander Esch (19th overall)
1st round Grade: B
Thoughts: While the majority of the league believed a receiver would’ve been the selection, LVE was a good pick. He is a big athletic off the ball linebacker, that tracks the ball well. He brings coverage ability and sure tackling as well.
NY Giants
Draft Pick: Saquon Barkley
1st round Grade: A
Thoughts: Barkley was the consensus No. 1 running back and even prospect on many draft boards. His athletic prowess and playmaking ability should extend Eli Manning’s career a bit. Pair him with OBJ, Engram, & Sheppard creates an offense you could only dream of.
Philadelphia Eagles
Draft Pick: None
1st round Grade: 52 SB Champs decided to trade back and garnish more draft capital. They did not possess a second-round pick until the trade with the Ravens. They also received the Raven’s 2019 second round pick.
Washington Redskins
Draft Pick: DT Da’Ron Payne (13th overall)
1st round Grade: B-
Thoughts: Payne offers some potential as a three-down defender, but will be an immediate impact on the league’s worst rush defense. Former Alabama teammate was lobbying earlier in the process for Payne.
NFC North
Chicago Bears
Draft Pick: LB Roquan Smith (8th overall)
1st round grade: A
Thoughts: Roquan is an uber-talented player. He brings the needed speed, intelligence, and abilities this defense needs. The Bears defense was already one to watch out for in 2018, adding this type of player will boost their front seven tremendously.
Detriot Lions
Draft Pick: C/OG Frank Ragnow (20th overall)
1st round grade: B+
Thoughts: Matthew Stafford needed two huge holes to be address in this off-season, the offensive line & a running back. Ragnow address the interior line to protect the star signal caller and move bodies in the ground game. I believe happy QB’s can win games leading into January.
Green Bay Packers:
Draft Pick: CB Jaire Alexander (18th overall)
1st round Grade: A
Thoughts: A year after selecting CB Kevin King, Green Bay adds another capable cover guy. Alexander is athletic, fast, and makes plays on the football. After trading Randall to the Browns this offseason the cornerback position was a clear-cut need. Rodgers needs help and it starts with an improved defense.
Minnesota Vikings
Draft Pick: CB Mike Hughes (30th overall)
1st round Grade: B+
This selection is much underrated. This defense is one of the best in the league right now, but adding Hughes helps push them higher. Pairing him in the slot alongside Xavier Rhodes & Trae Waynes until he grows into the outside defender. He also adds kick/punt return ability as well.
NFC South
Atlanta Falcons
Draft Pick: WR Calvin Ridley(26th overall)
1st round Grade: A-
Thoughts: This team needs to replace interior defensive lineman Dontari Poe, but they selected to add an explosive receiver. Ridley is believed to be the best receiver in the class by many. He offers elite route running, separation, & playmaking. He will join Julio Jones, Sanu, Coleman, & Freeman. Matt Ryan must be a happy man right now.
Carolina Panthers
Draft Pick: WR D.J. Moore (24th overall)
1st round Grade: A
Thoughts: FINALLY! For most of Cam Newton’s career, his front office has decided to deliver with a dynamic receiver. Moore is fast, strong, & tough. He can play anywhere on the offensive formation. He will bring the explosive plays and swag this offense missed from the departure of Steve Smith.
New Orleans Saints
Draft Pick: ED Marcus Davenport (14th overall)
1st round Grade: C+
Thoughts: The reigning NFC South Champs decided to jump from the 27th spot to 14. They wanted to add a pass rushing presence opposite of all-pro end Cameron Jordan. Davenport offers a high-risk, high reward potential as a prospect. The trade up and picks given up is the reason the grade is lower than expected.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Draft Pick: DT Vita Vea (12th overall)
1st round Grade: B
Thoughts: The Bucs attacked a position that was not desperate for an upgrade. There were bigger holes on this defense & team. Vea is an athletic monster in the middle that will be paired with pro bowl DT Gerald McCoy. He isn’t just a massive body because he offers interior pressure as well.
NFC West
Arizona Cardinals
Draft Pick: QB Josh Rosen (10th overall)
1st round Grade: A+
Thoughts: I couldn’t think of another team more desperate for a QB than the Cardinals. With Josh Rosen the best “pure passer” falling into their lap, this is a great pick. He doesn’t have to play immediately with Sam Bradford in-house. The pressure isn’t heavy on his shoulders like some of his draft counterparts.
Los Angeles Rams
Draft Pick: None
1st round Grade: B-
Thoughts: The Rams traded their first-round pick to the Patriots (Isaiah Wynn) for receiver Brandin Cooks. Albeit, Cooks is a legit deep threat that will take the top off a defense, he is not a game changer. He also wasn’t worth a first-round selection.
San Francisco 49ers
Draft Pick: OT Mike McGlinchey (9th overall)
1st round Grade: C+
Thoughts: This was another shocker selection because OT wasn’t a position of need at the time. The Niners decided to trade RT Trent Brown to the Patriots earlier today for a 3rd round pick. McGlinchey is a big athletic tackle with long arms and strength. He has to work on his lower body and leverage due to his height. The pick makes sense now, but I’m not a fan of it.
Seattle Seahawks
Draft Pick: RB Rashaad Penny (27th overall)
1st round Grade: D-
Thoughts: This was the WORST selection by far, especially after trading back. Penny isn’t the second or third best running back in this class. I believe he is a good quality back, but he is the biggest reach of the draft so far. He was selected over the likes of, Sony Michel, Nick Chubb, & Derrius Guice. The offensive line would’ve been a better selection here, even if you were going to reach!
NFL Mock Draft 1.0
- Cleveland Browns (0-16) – Sam Darnold (USC) QB
The Browns under former General Manager Sashi Brown passed quarterbacks such as Jared Goff, Carson Wentz, Deshaun Watson, Patrick Mahomes, and the list goes on. They drafted developmental quarterback Deshon Kizer, then went on to destroy the kid’s confidence throughout the season. Coach Jackson finally grabs a quarterback that he wants to coach. Darnold gives the Browns an accurate, strong-armed, gunslinger as their signal caller. He has the tools to be a franchise quarterback in this league. Top needs: QB, RB, CB
- New York Giants (3-13) – Josh Rosen (UCLA) QB
New GM Dave Gettleman finds his Eli Manning successor with this pick. The most pro ready and polished QB in this class. Rosen can make all the throws, intelligent, and excels in a pro-style system. He can sit for at least a year while Eli finishes one more season as a Giant, and has arguably the best receiver in the league (Odell Beckham). A talented defense to bat as well. This is the best pick for the future. Top needs: OT, QB, RB
- Indianapolis Colts (4-12) – Bradley Chubb (NC ST) DE/EDGE
The Colts have fired Chuck Pagano and are waiting to find his replacement. GM Chris Ballard decided to draft on the defensive side of the ball with 3 of their first 4 picks last year. That trend continues at least for this pick. The Colts were at their best with a front seven that could get after the quarterback when needed. Drafting Chubb here gives them a versatile edge defender that can help set the edge vs the run and wreak havoc on passing downs. He can be the disruptive force on the edge they desperately need. Top needs: ILB, OL, Edge
- Cleveland Browns (0-16) – Saquan Barkley (Penn St) RB
After selecting what hopes to be their franchise quarterback, the Browns take the best offensive player in the draft. Isaiah Crowell is a free agent and was not a world beater either. Barkley has a rare combination of speed, power, quickness, and agility. Pairing him with the explosive Duke Johnson would truly give Hue Jackson the toys on offense to challenge teams. They need to change the culture and this is a great start. Top needs: QB, RB, CB
- Denver Broncos (5-11) – Josh Allen (Wyoming) QB
Since the retirement of Peyton Manning after the 2015 SB winning season, John Elway has draft two quarterbacks to no avail!! Two consecutive seasons the Broncos have missed the playoffs and a lot of that is due to the quarterback position. Josh Allen is the choice to turn around this offense and team. Allen has the “prototypical” build with traits to match. The offense has weapons to put up points and win games, they just need a quality quarterback. Third times a charm? Better hope so!! Top needs: OG, QB, OT
- New York Jets (5-11) – Baker Mayfield (Oklahoma) QB
No one in their right minds believed the Jets would finish the season with 5 wins. Josh Mccown and company did some good things considering the pressure on the coaching staff etc. Insert the cocky/brash Baker Mayfield, he will bring electricity to the offense. Baker’s bravado and character fit the NY atmosphere. He gives them a playmaker at the quarterback position to build around for 10-15 years. Top needs: QB, RB, OT
- Tampa Bay Buccaneers (5-11) – Arden Key (LSU) DE/OLB
This defense finished the season with just 22 total sacks on the season, that is PUTRID!!! Adding an explosive pass rusher in Arden Key would provide a boost to their sack total next season. Key has a quick first step with the ability to bend off the edge and can rush with his hand in the dirt or standing up. The Bucs defense can only go up from here, considering there is not a worse ranking than 32nd. Top needs: DE, RB, CB
- Chicago Bears (5-11) – Calvin Ridley (Alabama) WR
Mitch Trubisky will get a boost when number one receiver Cameron Meredith returns from a torn ACL next season, but he needs a young playmaker alongside him. Selecting Calvin Ridley brings a mixture of speed, athletic playmaking, great route running, and good hands. Meredith and Ridley along with that elite rushing attack would give the young Trubisky an offense capable to of putting up points in 2018. Top needs: WR, OL, CB
- San Francisco 49ers (6-10) – Quenton Nelson (Notre Dame) G
The Niners caught a break at the trade deadline by getting Jimmy Garappolo from the Patriots for a year-old pack of peanuts. He has led them to 5 wins to close the season and displayed that he is a potential franchise quarterback. The Notre Dame stud brings a nasty attitude with the skills to match. Nelson is the right pick to help build the proper offensive line for your offense. Nelson will help throw bodies around in the club and protect Jimmy GQ like a secret serviceman. Top needs: WR, OL, CB
- Oakland Raiders (6-10) – Joshua Jackson (Iowa) CB
New coach John Gruden aka Mr.100-Million-dollar man. He loves defense and this is one of the worst defenses in the league. Last April, they selected CB Gareon Conley out of Ohio State, time to repeat that trend. Joshua Jackson will give Gruden a pair of young, tall, and athletic corners. He can play a mixture of coverages with their scheme versatility. The Hawkeyes ball-hawking corner would put a smile on Gruden’s face. Top needs: CB, ILB, OT
- Miami Dolphins (6-10) – Roquon Smith (UGA) ILB/OLB
Selecting an impact defensive player would do wonders for a team trying to get back to the playoffs. Inserting Roquon Smith at inside linebacker would deliver a playmaking missile to this defense. He is an old/new school hybrid. He is athletic enough to cover in space, tackles with firm sound technique, and diagnose plays like a veteran. Sliding him beside Kiko Alonso and the elder Lawrence Timmons could be huge for this defense. Top needs: OG, ILB, RB
- Cincinnati Bengals (7-9) – Mike McGlinchey (ND) LT
Cincy has a solid quarterback with a plethora of weapons but lost their ironman LT in free agency. Leaving Cedric Ogbuehi and 11-year veteran Eric Winston, basically an upgrade is PRIORITY!!! McGlinchey can play on the right side to replace Winston or on the left side as normal. This pick would be a huge help as the Bengals prepare to rebound next season. Top needs: OL, QB, LB
- Washington Redskins (7-9) –Minkah Fitzpatrick (Bama) S/CB
This pick could be used on a running back since their running attack ranked 28th in the league under 100 yards per game, but they can add a quality runner later in a deep class. Adding a playmaking versatile safety/corner hybrid would be great. Fitzpatrick can slide in a Free Safety and move Dj Swearinger to his natural position Strong safety. A swiss army knife is always great to have in your toolbox. Redskins will be pleased with this pick. Top needs: QB, LB, S
- Green Bay Packers (7-9) -Denzel Ward (Ohio State) CB
After losing Aaron Rodgers week six to a broken collarbone the Packers deficiencies were glaring and the entire world could see them. The defense needs work after selecting Kevin King and Josh Jones with their two first pick, they take another defensive back here. Denzel Ward is a press man corner that excels at limiting separation and staying attached to his receiver. This pick will provide the Packers with three young defensive backs to build around. Top needs: CB, OL, WR
- Arizona Cardinals (8-8) -Christian Kirk (Texas A&M) WR
Cardinals lost their head coach and quarterback both to retirement after the 2017 season. While that leaves a vacancy at the quarterback position, the draft board does not favor that position. Larry Fitzgerald may be retiring soon, it is time to prepare for the future. Kirk is an explosive playmaker that can move all over the formation. Pairing him with Larry, David Johnson, and John Brown creates an explosive offense no matter who the quarterback may be. Top needs: QB, OL, WR
- Baltimore Ravens (9-7) -Courtland Sutton (SMU) WR
Joe Flacco and the Ravens offense have been pedestrian for the past two seasons. His supporting cast is average and does not move the needle. He was at his best with a receiver that provides a larger catch radius (Anquan Boldin). Courtland brings a 6’4 frame and larger catch radius to match. He is a big bodied receiver that can be the downfield weapon and red zone threat Flacco needs. Top needs: WR, TE, RB
- Los Angeles Chargers -Connor Williams (Texas) LT
Philip Rivers is not getting younger and while most fans would like to draft his successor, the first round is not the place to do it. Joe Barksdale has been a train wreck in 2017 and with an aging quarterback that is not ideal. Connor Williams will give Rivers a young tackle that can play both sides. They can start him on the right side until Russell Okung moves on, then switch back to the blindside. Top needs: OT, QB, LB
- Seattle Seahawks -Clelin Ferrell (Clemson) DE
After losing Cliff Avril and the uncertainty of his playing status going forward leaves a hole on the edge. Ferrell would fit into this physical aggressive scheme in Seattle. He can play the run and rush off the edge. He could move around and rush inside like Michael Bennett. The Seahawks live off four-man pressures and this pick continues to maintain the culture. Top needs: OT, CB, OG
- Dallas Cowboys- Mike Gesicki (Penn State) Tight End
The 28th ranked passing attack this season needs a boost in the talent department. Gesicki gives Dak the replacement for “old reliable” Jason Witten at the tight end spot. He will also give them a dangerous two tight end set, a versatile weapon to move around the formation, and roam the middle of the field. Pairing Gesicki with young guns Dak, Zeke, and that phenomenal offensive line sounds like a match made in heaven. Top needs: TE, DT, CB
- Detroit Lions -Vita Vea (Washington) DT
The Lions will be losing an old Haloti Ngata for a young version. Vita Vea will provide an extremely talented tackle that is scheme versatile as well. He offers more in the pass rush department than former teammate Danny Shelton. He is a ridiculous athlete for a man over 330 pounds with quickness and speed. He would bolster this defensive line and command double teams to single the edge rushers. Top needs: DE, OG, LB
- Buffalo Bills- Christian Wilkins (Clemson) DT
After making the playoffs for the first time since 1999, this team is making strides. Trading away Marcel Dareus left a void in the middle of this defense that needs to be filled. Wilkins is not the nose tackle that Dareus is, but he adds a boost to the interior pass rush. In a division ruled by Tom Brady, nothing bothers him more than the interior pressure in the A gaps. Wilkins can help finishing the rebuild of this defense and team. Top needs: QB, LB, DT
- Buffalo Bills (via Chiefs) -Tremaine Edmunds (VTech) OLB
Hmm back so, soon are we? With the second of their back to back picks, the Bills continue to build the defense. Head coach Sean Mcdermott believes in defense and Edmunds would fit perfectly. An athletic linebacker that can rush, cover in space, and cover tight ends. This kid is a playmaker and will be welcomed to this blue-collar team. top needs: QB, LB, DT
- Los Angeles Ram- Billy Price (Ohio State) Center
One of the best/biggest free agent signings in the offseason last year was left tackle Andrew Whitworth. This move allowed the Ram to trade the BUST Greg Robinson to the Lions (Poor Lions)!! Upgrading the offensive line is a must to keep this offense on schedule. Center John Sullivan is solid but aging, insert Billy Price from the Buckeyes. He is a strong versatile center that can plug and play. He will help open running lanes inside and keep Goff protected in the middle of the line. This offense does not plan on being a one year wonder. Top needs: CB, OL, LB
- Carolina Panthers -Duke Ejiofor (Wake Forest) DE
After losing a close game to the New Orleans Saints, one of the glaring issues was no outside pass rush. Drew Brees had ample time most of the game to sit and wait for crossing patterns and slant routes. Duke can bring the edge pressure with an array of pass rushing moves. Cam needs better weapons this draft is deep with offensive weapons. Top needs: OL, WR, DE
- Tennessee Titans -Harold Landry (Boston College) OLB
The Titans defense needs to add an edge pass rusher to help take them to the next level. Landry is a good athlete that knows how to play standing up and with his hand in the dirt. He is known for getting after the passer with 16.5 sacks in 2016. Defensive Coordinator Dick Lebeau loves his 3-4 defensive scheme and Landry is a clear fit. Top needs: TE, OG, WR
- Jacksonville Jaguars – Orlando Brown (Oklahoma) LT
What do you get a team that has few needs for improvement? Certainly not a quarterback since they love mediocrity. Upgrading the tackle position could bode well for their current approach. The gargantuan left tackle Orlando Brown is a physical blocker at the point of attack and will toss defenders around. Due to athletic limitations, he may need to move inside to guard but he can be of service in upgrading the line. Top needs: TE, OG, WR
- Philadelphia Eagles – Josh Allen (Kentucky) OLB
The Eagles had a successful season that could have gone farther with Star QB Carson Wentz. They do not have any glaring hole or issues on their current roster. One spot worth upgrading is outside linebacker. Nigel Bradham is solid but Josh Allen would finish off their athletic trio of Kendricks and Hicks. Allen could rush in sub packages and drop in coverage with no issues. This defense could finish next season on an entirely different level than 2017. Top needs: LT, LB, CB
- New Orleans Saints – Rashaan Evans (Bama) MLB
The Saints defense took tremendous strides this season and it all began with drafting successfully. That trend continues here by addressing the lack of talent at middle linebacker. They missed out on Rueben Foster, they will luck up to get one of his former running mates. Evans is a mixture of Foster and former tide backer Donte Hightower. He can do multiple things and that would benefit Who Dat nation greatly. Top needs: QB, C, WR
- Pittsburgh Steelers – Malik Jefferson (Texas) MLB
The uncertainty of Ryan Shazier’s (Neck) playing status going forward leaves a gaping hole in the middle of their defense. Jefferson would be a perfect selection. He is athletic enough to drop in zone and physical enough to be a downhill thumper. He is a tackling machine and that is always a plus. Top needs: ILB, QB, S
- Atlanta Falcons – Da’Ron Payne (Bama) DT
The Falcons may lose big defensive tackle Dontari Poe to free agency and will need to find a replacement. The Crimson tide’s tackle brings physicality and athleticism to the Falcons already fast defense. He can stop the run and get after the passer and raise this defenses ceiling even higher. Top needs: DT, OG, S
- Minnesota Vikings – Maurice Hurst (Michigan) DT
The Vikings have seemed to lose one of the most talented defensive tackles in the league Sharrif Floyd to nerve damage in his knee. The word is he will not be able to resume his career. Hurst would be a good replacement for Floyd’s presence alongside big Linval Joseph. He will bring that quick interior pressure to an already scary pass rush. Top needs: OT, OG, DL
- New England Patriots – Sam Hubbard (Ohio State) DE/LB
Is this Jamie Collins 2.0? Bill Belichick loves versatile athletic defenders and he gets one here. Hubbard plays defensive end and displays the ability to rush inside and out. He has the athletic ability to possibly drop into coverage and play off-line. Collins last season in college he played defensive end and predominately lined up as an off-line linebacker. I perceive the same fate for the Buckeyes edge rusher. Top needs: CB, QB, Edge

CRR Fantasy: 5 Breakout QBs
CRR Fantasy: 5 Breakout QBs
I know how everyone loves to talk RBs in Fantasy Football, so we will save them for last because we are aware they come off of the board pretty fast. Everyone needs a bell-cow or two to make their season a success. However, when choosing a signal caller if you haven’t chosen the golden boy Tom Brady, A-A-RON Rodgers or Matty Ice Ryan, where do you go. I got you covered with the 5 Breakout QBs in this article.
5. Winners Win It’s that simple…
It really is. The Houston Texans drafted Deshaun Watson for a reason; that reason is winning. Sure one can say he had an explosive receiver who helped him along the way but the guy has pure football intelligence and will fit well in Bill O’Brien’s system no matter how complex it is. I have heard enough about the “Tom Savage is real” conspiracy. Deshaun cannot wait to get the rock to beastly WR DeAndre Hopkins who is looking for a star to help him bounce back in 2017. Look for Watson’s big play ability to Sam Bradford like numbers for Houston this year. I am talking 20+ TDs for the young buck. I predict this, but he has to win the job first.
4. Put some Spek on his name…
You’ve said it. I’ve said it, HECK, his own family has surely said it. Sam Bradford is the leagues most overvalued player. Well, last year he showed the league that if you invest largely and have patience, he will produce. This injury prone Ram, I mean Eagle, no dang it, he’s a Viking, threw for 3877-yds, 20-TDs, and only 5-Ints during his 2016 campaign. The team is looking at Teddy B in the rear view because they feel confident in this starter. Shouldn’t you for your Fantasy team?
3. Only 6-picks on the season, two seasons straight? Quit hating!
So this guy is not going to lose you many points, that is for sure. Anyone who knows me knows I have a man-crush on Tyrod Taylor, but there is a legitimate reason. The guy is a dual threat. What he can’t get done to you in the air, he will do to you on the ground without a doubt. Points are points, and I’ll take them any way I can get him. Tyrod scored 94 of his 313 total FPS on the ground. It takes 25-yds in most leagues to even gain one point, and T-Mobile can get you 1 point on the ground with a simple 10-yard run that sure people gameplan for but they cannot stop. Get him before everyone else figures it out or reads this post.
2. Humble but dangerous…
There is no quieter QB in football than Marcus Mariota; this does nothing for the stat chart, but his gameplay does. Marcus may have only had one 300-yd game in 2016, but he is 26/9 TD/INT ratio makes up for that. He now has a beast in Corey Davis to complement an excellent stable of RBs. There’s really nothing more to say here. He lets his game do the talking and you will as well if you pick up this potential breakout player.
1. Already Broke Out
His organization undervalues this him, and he will make them pay dearly in 2018. The reason I say Kirk Cousins is undervalued is that only one QB in football had more +300-yd games (7) than this Redskin. When you average 23.7 points a game and get a beast receiver in Terrell Pryor come over from the Browns to boost a team that already has Jamison Crowder who had 7-TDs last year, you have to see this guy floating around the top of charts in scoring in 2017. He is about the seventh QB going off of boards in most leagues according to Fantasy Pros. So when the big names have left the board, don’t sleep on this one.

CRR: Damian’s Full First Round Mock Draft
After an exciting and crazy 2016 College football season, it is now time for the NFL draft process to commence. Players are gauging their stock, training, and declaring for this year’s draft. The order for the top ten picks has been set. Wondering who your team will or should take? No worries that is why you have ME!!! I will break down the top ten draft picks for you!!
1. Cleveland (1-15)—Myles Garrett, DE/OLB, Texas A&M, Jr.
2. San Francisco (2-14)—Mike Williams, WR, Clemson, rJr.
3. Chicago (3-13)—Deshone Kizer, QB, Notre Dame, rSo.
4. Jacksonville (3-13) — Jamal Adams, SS, LSU, Jr.
5. Tennessee from L.A. Rams (4-12)—Jalen “Teez” Tabor, CB, Florida, Jr.
6. N.Y. Jets (5-11) —Malik Hooker, FS, Ohio St., rSo.
7. L.A. Chargers (5-11)—Derek Barnett, DE, Tennessee, Jr.
8. Carolina (6-10)—Dalvin Cook, RB, Florida St., Jr.
9. Cincinnati (6-9-1)—Rueben Foster, ILB, Alabama, Sr.
10. Buffalo (7-9)—Mitch Trubisky, QB, North Carolina, rJr.
11. New Orleans (7-9)—Marshon Lattimore, CB, Ohio State., rSo.
There is an issue in New Orleans, and that is DEFENSE!!! This pick must be on the defensive side of the ball. This defense ranked 31st in scoring defense per game (28.4), 32nd in passing yards allowed per game (274), and 27th in sacks in the league. Lattimore is the pick here; he will boost and solidify the three-man corner rotation. He also has the upside and skill-set of a number 1 corner, that would help due to Delvin Breaux having an injury history. Coverage can help the pass rush, and this is a needed pick for the Saints.
12. Cleveland from Philadelphia (7-9)—Marlon Humphrey, CB, rSo.
The Browns went Myles number one overall to fix this defense, and now they go Mr. Humphrey now. The 6’1 200 lb. Corner has experience playing man and zone coverages. He is the physical corner that does not mind tackling in the run game. Marlon is best suited in zone coverage because his route recognition is top notch. He is versatile enough with his size to cover bigger receivers and speed to stick with faster receivers. Joe Haden has not been the same player for a few years now. Build for the future Cleveland and create a stingy defense.
13. Arizona (7-8-1)—OJ Howard, TE, Alabama, Sr.
The Cardinals were assured their quarterback position w/Carson Palmer returning for the 2017 season. This team lost their second big bodied receiver Michael Floyd after releasing him for a DUI incident in 2016. The age-less wonder Larry Fitzgerald lead the team in reception and yards, while second was star running back David Johnson. That is not the ideal situation you would like to be in for an offense, insert OJ Howard. The 6’6 250 lb. would give Palmer a big, fast, and strong target in the middle of the field. He can take advantage of safeties, linebackers, and some corners. Jermaine Gresham and Darren Fells are definitely not the answers!!!
14. Indianapolis (8-8)—Leonard Fournette, RB, LSU, Jr.
Andrew Luck has been internally praying for some form of help, and here it comes. Last year the leading rushers for the Colts were a 33-year-old Frank Gore and Andrew Luck. The selection of Fournette would give them a young stud running back to learn the pro game from a potential hall of famer. The former LSU back would provide a powerful runner that wears down defenses and forces an extra defender in the box and opens up the passing game. You’re welcome LUCK!!
15. Philadelphia (Minnesota)—Corey Davis, Wr, Cent Michigan, Sr.
The Eagles drafted Carson Wentz to become their Franchise quarterback, but you must find him a number one receiver. Philly ranked 7th in the league in drops this season, and your leading receiver was your tight end. Corey gives Wentz that boundary receiver everyone thought Jordan Matthews would become. Davis is a smooth route runner, can play in the slot, and outside the number. With these two young players in the fold, the Eagles should be in good hands.
16. Baltimore (8-8)—Budda Baker, FS, Washington, Jr.
The Ravens had one of the league’s best defenses this year, after bringing in veteran safety Eric Weddle to help a struggling secondary. Weddle is 32 years old and is losing speed as time passes. The selection of Baker gives this defense a burst of youth to pair with rookie corner Tavon Young. The former Washington bulldog has the range to cover deep, man coverage, and the intelligence to diagnose plays. He is an active participant in the run game. Budda Baker looks like a Baltimore Raven!!!
17. Washington (8-7-1)—Malik McDowell, DT, Michigan St., Jr.
Washington has one of the league’s worst defenses, ranking 28th in total yards allowed per game. With defensive end Chris Baker and impending free agent, adding Malik as a young replacement. Mcdowell reminds me of last year’s 7th overall pick DefForest Buckner, as a 3-4 end. Inserting the former Spartan would give them an athletic and strong defender that can hold his own vs. the run while providing an edge pass rush.
18. Tennessee (9-7)—John Ross, WR, Washington, rJr.
The speedy receiver from UW is the best pick for the Titans. They are losing Kendall Wright to free agency and Ross can be an upgrade. Ross brings quick feet, precise route running, and long speed to an offense dedicated on running the ball. This team will have a young receiving core of Rishard Matthews, Tajae Sharpe, and John Ross. The play action pass will be crucial for this team’s success in 2017!!
19. Tampa Bay (9-7)—Forrest Lamp, OG, West Kentucky, Sr.
With no receiver on the board of value here, the Bucs grab the most versatile linemen in the draft. Forrest started four years at left tackle but is transitioning inside due to lack of length. He will provide a needed boost to the interior of this offensive line. Tampa has one of the best young signal callers in the league in Jameis Winston, and the best way to help him develop further is to protect him. Upgrading and strengthening their offensive line will help boost the 24th ranked run game. You can also move Lamp to center, and he will flourish also, this is a chess piece of an offensive lineman. Win the trenches Tampa!!!
20. Denver (9-7)—Ryan Ramczyk, OT, Wisconsin, rJr.
A year ago today, the Denver Broncos were the newly crowned SB champions. The 2016 season was not as kind to the former champs. They missed the playoffs entirely and was not the same team from a year ago. Their biggest problem resided in the trenches on both sides of the ball. The offensive line ranked 24th in the league at season’s end. Insert Ramczyk at tackle to improve that ranking. This team offensively was a wreck this season, couldn’t run the ball or pass it consistently. Upgrading the offensive line is key to finding offensive consistency.
21. Detroit—Solomon Thomas, DE, Standford, rSo.
This team showed they can contend in their division and win without Megatron. After a quick playoff exit, this team needs to attack a defense. Solomon Thomas is their guy!! The Lions ranked 31st in the league in sacks this season w/26. That is unacceptable when you are facing Aaron Rodgers twice a year!! Ezekiel Ansah saw a lot of protection slid his direction because they didn’t have another capable rusher. Thomas would instantly give them a versatile defender to pair with Ansah. The former Stanford Cardinal can play the run and rush the passer inside and out. Ezekiel, Help Is On the Way!!!
22. Miami—David Njoku, TE, Miami, rSo.
This team did not have a tight end to catch 30+ passes, and that is uncommon. A quarterback’s best friend tends to be a capable tight end who effectively controls the middle of the field. They brought in Jordan Cameron, and that was a BROWN like fail!!! Njoku has the potential to be a young Vernon Davis; he is fast and athletic. The former Miami Hurricane will see a lot of single coverage early on because teams must respect the receiving trio of Landry, Stills, and Parker. Somewhere Ryan Tannehill is smiling!!!
23. N.Y. Giants (11-5)—Taco Charlton, DE, Michigan, Sr.
The Giants spent over 200 million dollars attempting to retool their defense, and it worked!! Now their best pass rusher Jason Pierre-Paul is a free agent, and you need a young, explosive pass rusher to replace him. Taco has the frame (6’6 273) to set the edge in the run game. This defense does not miss a beat with this pick.
24. Oakland (12-4)—Sidney Jones, CB, Washington, Jr.
The Raiders were one of the best overall teams this season. Besides the injury that ended star QB Derek Carr’s season, their defense was ultimately their biggest problem. This defense ranked 24th in passing yards allowed; the Sean Smith project did not go as planned. Drafting stud corner Sidney Jones gives them a younger and faster corner for the future. He can be their chess piece allowing him to cover the better athletic receivers alongside David Amerson, and possibly use Smith to cover tight ends or bigger receivers.
25. Houston (9-7)—Tre’Davious White, CB, LSU, Jr.
This defense was one of the best in the league last season; it takes a step closer to becoming dominate. Pending the resigning of stud corner AJ Bouye, adding White gives them a 4-man unit. The former LSU Tiger was left out on an island in college because of his elite man to man coverage skills. He has reps from playing in the slot as well, and that is a plus. He can come in and play primarily from the slot or on the outside. Especially with quarterbacks like Andrews Luck and Marcus Mariota in their division, this pick will pay dividends. The best offense is defense nine times out of ten!!!
26. Seattle (10-5-1) —Garett Bolles, OT, Utah, Jr.
Russell Wilson is one of the league’s better quarterbacks; he can beat you with his arms and legs. The problem last year was he played behind the league’s 32nd ranked offensive line (https://www.profootballfocus.com/pro-ranking-all-32-nfl-offensive-lines-this-season). When your center is receiving the top overall, pass, and run blocking grade that is a red flag. This group ranked bottom 10 in sacks allowed per game with 42, and that is a horrible stat for a team trying to protect their star QB. Bolles is one of the more athletic offensive lineman that I’ve seen, he has great footwork for a tackle. He moves very well and smooth vs. rushers. Russell needs to protection, and with Bolles mean streak it should help the running backs as well.
27. Kansas City (12-4)—Deshaun Watson, QB, Clemson, Jr.
GOODBYE Alex Smith!!! This pick is one of the more needed picks in the draft because Smith is holding back this team. He is a game manager at best and has weapons to be successful. He missed two big throws to Tyreek Hill that would’ve changed the outcome vs. the Steelers. Watson has the arm talent, athleticism, and potential to be a legit weapon at quarterback. He is a winner and leader that you want at the quarterback position. Time for a change Andy!!!
28. Dallas (13-3)—Charles Harris, DE, Missouri, Jr.
The Cowboys were close to the NFC championship game; they are one of the favorites to win it all this year. In order for that to take place, this team needs to upgrade an average defense. While they ranked 13th in the league in sacks, they did not have a true pass rush. Against Aaron Rodgers, they dialed up the blitz a bit that game. Randy Gregory has not reliable just yet, grabbing Harris is the right choice. The Missouri defender brings a pass rusher that can beat you with quickness and has a counter spin to add. He will bring an upgrade to their pass rush.
29. Green Bay (10-6)—Christian Mccaffery, RB, Stanford, Jr.
The Packers offense was inconsistent this past season, both running backs Eddie Lacy and James Stark went down. That forced receiver converted back Ty Montgomery to carry the “load”. Ty had some success, but he is not a conventional back. Mccaffery is a better runner, and he gives the same receiving ability out of the backfield. He also is a good return man as well, and he is a mismatch problem. The former Stanford Cardinal can be a big weapon for the beast we call Arod!!!
30. Pittsburgh (11-5)—Takkarist Mckinley, OLB, UCLA, Sr.
The Steelers won their division and reached the AFC championship with a young, fast, up and coming defense. This pick brings more speed, youth, and athleticism to their defense. Having the wise old man in James Harrison is alright, but adding McKinley will provide a young pass rushing presence. He is a freakish athlete that has great speed coming off the edge. The Steelers run a 3-4 defense, and that is the best fit for Takkarist.
31. Atlanta (11-5)—Carl Lawson, DE, Auburn, Jr.
The Super Bowl runner-up Atlanta Falcons had a great season until they became the Golden State Falcons and blew a 28-3 lead. Their young inexperienced defense showcased their potential in the first 3 ½ quarter’s vs. Tom Brady in the SB. They were shallow in defensive line depth, and a lack of rotation eventually doomed them. Carl is an explosive pass rusher. Adding Carl to this already fast athletic defense helps create more of a rotation and single blocking assignments. With him across from stud rusher Vic Beasley and Grady Jarrett inside, look out quarterbacks.
32. New England (14-2)—Hasson Reddick, OLB, Temple, Sr.
The Super Bowl champions New England Patriots are all in for the “Blitz For Six”. They have to retool their team in order to complete that mission. After trading two of their better defenders in Chandler Jones and Jamie Collins, selecting Reddick is the best option here. Teaming the former Temple Owl with stud linebacker Dont’a Hightower would give him an aggressive, athletic combo. Reddick is a quick-twitch athlete that is a dynamic playmaker in space. He can rush the passer, blitz, and drop into zone. Another stud LB for Bill? I say YES!!
