The highly talented Richard Sherman, CB for the Seattle Seahawks, held his Second Annual National Celebrity Softball Game at Safeco Field on Sunday, July 21, 2014. This event benefitted the Richard Sherman Blanket Coverage Foundation that he started in July of the previous year.

According Sherman, this foundation, started with the help of his close family and friends, is a charity which strives to “channel its resources to ensure that as many children as possible are provided with proper school supplies and adequate clothing.” In its short duration, this charity has influenced many people to contribute to their cause and has been a prime example of The Golden Rule, “Treat others the way you want to be treated.”

During this years National Celebrity Softball Game, a portion of the game proceeds went to the All-Pro corner’s charity; A perfect example of how Sherman’s foundation truly proves that they are in the spirit of giving.

Richard Sherman’s Blanket Coverage foundation has proven that both supporters and fans are willing to demonstrate good deeds to others.  This Sunday’s fundraiser drew in 22,033 fans to watch the game. Many celebrities showed up to show their support for the cause; particularly Russell Wilson, Michael Bennett, Earl Thomas, Bobby Wagner, Doug Baldwin, and Jermaine Kearse whose support for their teammate Richard Sherman appears to be constant on and off the field.

“It’s a humbling experience, just to see the celebrities that came out for the game, showing their respect, giving back, showing their philanthropy,” said Sherman. “But also to see the fans, who are always outstanding and always extremely supportive.”

The support of each of the Seattle Seahawk players present demonstrated Pete Carroll’s Win Forever philosophy which states that, “Winning forever is much more than winning next Sunday’s game. It’s about competing, maximizing your abilities and making the most of the opportunities in front of you,” Carroll says, “so that each player can become the best he can be and each team can achieve its fullest potential.” Not only are they working toward achieving their fullest potential, but by benefitting Sherman’s cause, they are working to help future generations achieve their fullest potential as well.

Their support of the Second Annual Celebrity Softball Game exhibited that there is more to being a professional athlete than playing the game; Supporting a great cause by displaying kindness and positively influencing communities all over America is a far greater purpose for their fame and it speaks louder than words any day of the week. Hopefully more celebrities will follow Sherman’s example.
